Why Did Jesus Come Luke 2:8-15, 25-35 Dec20, 2005
There are at least ten statements in the New Testament telling why Jesus came down to this earth. The salvation of our souls, and the giving of abundant life are the primary reasons. During one Christmas season I wore a pin that said “Jesus is the reason for the Season.” At a hardware store a salesman took hold of the pin to read it. I asked him if he knew, “Jesus was the reason for the season”. He responded, “I know Jesus is the reason for everything.” He was not asking, Why Did Jesus Come? He Knew!
1. Jesus Came Because A Savior Was . . Promised. Lk. 2:8-15
A. The . . Presence Of The Angel Announcing. 2:8-10
8 In the same region, shepherds were staying out in the fields and keeping watch at night over their flock. 9 Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, "Don't be afraid, for look, I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all the people:
B. The . . Proclamation Of The Angel Announcing. 2:11-12
11 today a Savior, who is Messiah the Lord, was born for you in the city of David. 12 This will be the sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped snugly in cloth and lying in a manger."
C. The . . Praising Of The Angels Announcing. 2:13-14
13 Suddenly there was a multitude of the heavenly host with the angel, praising God and saying:
14 Glory to God in the highest heaven, and peace on earth to people He favors!
D. The . . Probing Of The Angels Announcement. 2:15
15 When the angels had left them and returned to heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let's go
straight to Bethlehem and see what has happened, which the Lord has made known to us."
When a person says an angel appeared to them we need to make sure it agrees with the Bible. In the text an angel appeared out of the clear but the shepherds were convinced he came from God. This angel proclaimed about the Christ child and how He could be found. The clothing for the baby made a significant identification so they could identify Him. Additional angels joined in the event in order to praise this unique event. Then the shepherds began to probe among themselves the information the angels gave. Did they want to check it out? Yes and they did.
2. Jesus Came Because God Had . . Prepared A Savior. Lk. 2:25-31
A. The Preparing Of A Savior And An . . Announcement To A Godly Man.. 2:25-26
25 There was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon. This man was righteous and devout, looking forward to Israel's consolation, and the Holy Spirit was on him. 26 It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he saw the Lord's Messiah.
B. The Preparing Of A Savior And An . . Acclamation By A Godly Man.. 2:27-28
27 Guided by the Spirit, he entered the temple complex. When the parents brought in the child Jesus to perform for Him what was customary under the law, 28 Simeon took Him up in his arms, praised God, and said:
C. The Preparing Of A Savior And An . . Appeasement For A Godly Man. 2:29-31
29 Now, Master, You can dismiss Your slave in peace, according to Your word.30 For my eyes have
seen Your salvation.31 You have prepared it in the presence of all peoples
God also gave Simeon quite an assignment for him as commissioned him to give some announcements to Mary and Joseph. When Simeon saw the Christ Child he acclaimed Him as the Christ for the information of all the people. Quite often a baby of 6 months to 2 years will look at me as if to say, “I know you, you’re a grandpa.” I can easily imagine how Simeon felt as he picked up Jesus at the prompting of the Holy Spirit. He wanted every body to know what the Spirit had told him. God promised Simeon he would not die before He saw the Lord’s Messiah. In granting this pleasure the Lord appeased His promise to Simeon.
3. Jesus Came Because God Had . . Predestined A Savior. Lk. 2:32-35
A. The Predestination Of A Savior And The . . Amazement Of His Parents. 2:32-33
32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles and glory to Your people Israel. 33 His father and mother were amazed at what was being said about Him.
B. The Predestination Of A Savior And The . . Announcement To Jesus’ Mother. 2:34-35
34 Then Simeon blessed them and told His mother Mary: "Indeed, this child is destined to cause the fall and rise of many in Israel and to be a sign that will be opposed — 35 and a sword will pierce your own soul — that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed." HCSB
Joseph and Mary did not know very far in advance that they would be chosen to become the earthly mother and father of Jesus. The events surrounding Christ birth amazed them. These events come as confirmations of the assignment God gave them. The announcement was made to Mary about future happenings that would be very sad for her to experience, but very necessary. Did this announcement help her when the actual experience came? I believe her understanding grew through the years as to Why Did Jesus Come? Amen? Amen!
