Worship The King of Kings    Matt. 1:20-23; 2:1-11     Dec. 19, 2010

What do you think when individuals say, an angel told them something? My first reaction is to doubt it and then to check with someone who knows them to see if these people are stable. If these people have the reputation of being sane men and women who live consistent lives with the Lord and their statements about an angel conversation agree generally with scripture I will probably believe them and seek to help them interpret clearer. The desire through any such experience should result in helping one Worship the King of Kings.

1.  Joseph Worshiped As He . . Believed The Angels Announcement. 1:20-23

A.  Joseph Worshiped As He Believed The . . Appearance of The Angel. 1:20a

20 But after he had considered these things, an angel of the Lord suddenly appeared to him in a

dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, don't be afraid to take Mary as your wife, . . .”

B.  Joseph Worshiped As He Believed The . . Appeal of The Angel. 1:20b- 21

“. . . because what has been conceived in her is by the Holy Spirit. 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to name Him Jesus, because He will save His people from their sins."

C.  Joseph Worshiped As He Believed The . . Announcement of The Angel. 1:20b-

22 Now all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet: 23 See, the

virgin will become pregnant and give birth to a son, and they will name Him Immanuel, which is

    translated "God is with us."

Joseph received and believed a message from the Lord’s angel. The angel appeared and told Joseph not to be afraid. If an angel appeared to you and you believed he was from the Lord would it cause you to worship? I believe he would affect me that way. The angel made an appeal to Joseph that he would understand why Mary was pregnant and believe this was the virgin birth prophesied by the prophet. The announcement also told Joseph this child would be Immanuel. He reminded Joseph what that title means.

2. The Wise Men Worshiped As They Follow The . . Bethlehem Star. 2:1-6

A.  The Wise Men Worshiped by Following The . . Sighting Of The Star. 2:1-2

1 After Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of King Herod, wise men from the east

arrived unexpectedly in Jerusalem, 2 saying, "Where is He who has been born King of the Jews?

For we saw His star in the east and have come to worship Him."

B.  The Wise Men Worshiped by Following The . . Scriptural Search of The Scribes. 2:3-6

3 When King Herod heard this, he was deeply disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. 4 So he assembled all the chief priests and scribes of the people and asked them where the Messiah would be born. 5 "In Bethlehem of Judea," they told him, "because this is what was written by the prophet: 6 And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the leaders of Judah: because out of you will come a leader who will shepherd My people Israel."

The wise men worshiped as they followed the sighting of this unusual star. My wife likes to gaze at stars and astrological phenomena. I have been out at all hours of the night to help her look at the starts or planets. If she lived near these wise men she might very well asked them to take her along. Somehow they believed the star related to the birth of the Christ Child. We do not know all the answers we can ask about these wise men and their adventure, but the Bible reports it to encourage us.

I attended a show at a planetarium one time about this very matter and after giving all the possibilities; we were told many just believe it is a miracle. I said a loud amen and enjoyed doing it very much.

3. The Wise Men Worshiped As They See The Christ Of . . Bethlehem. 2:7-11

A.  The Wise Men Worshiped As They Were . . Summoned by The King. 2:7-9a

7 Then Herod secretly summoned the wise men and asked them the exact time the star appeared.

8 He sent them to Bethlehem and said, "Go and search carefully for the child. When you find Him,

report back to me so that I too can go and worship Him." 9 After hearing the king, they went on

    their way.. . . “

B.  The Wise Men Worshiped As They Were . . Stopped by The Star. 2:9b-11a

“. . . And there it was the star they had seen in the east! It led them until it came and stopped

above the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they were overjoyed beyond

measure. 11 Entering the house, they saw the child with Mary His mother, and falling to their knees,

    they worshiped Him.

C  The Wise Men Worshiped As They Gave . . Significantly. 2:11b

Then they opened their treasures and presented Him with gifts: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

The wise men being summoned by the king had to feel good especially as he said he wanted to worship. They did not know at this time what a horrible reputation he had but the Lord corrected that.

How does a star stop and cause you to choose a particular sight to look for the Christ child? I don’t know but I believe it did. When the wise men came into the house and saw the Christ child they worshiped and it included giving significant gifts. A little later the Lord told Joseph to take the child to Egypt and these gifts no doubt helped to pay for the trip. As we Worship the King of Kings.

We will also give significantly. Amen? Amen!
