The Way Prepared†††† Matt. 3:1-12 †HCSB†††† Dec. 06, 2015
The Lord had several prophets to prepare the way of what He wanted done.† One of the greatest was John
the Baptist.† He came on the scene and began preaching the subject of repentance.† In to dayís world there is a
need of a John the Baptist sort of preacher to come on the scene and call for America to repent.† We hear many people calling for the call of revival in our land.† But as yet it has not been poured out on our land.† Does it depend upon us or other Christians to call out to the Lord for the Revival.† I think I am willing for it to come.† How about you?
1.†† The Way Prepared As John Calls for A . . Showing of Repentance.†† 3:1-6
A.†† The Showing of Repentance Is . . Required.††† 1:1-2
1 In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the Wilderness of Judea
2 and saying, "Repent, because the kingdom of heaven has come near!"
B.††† The Showing of Repentance Is Widely . . Shown As They Confessed Their Sin.††† 1:3-6
3 For he is the one spoken of through the prophet Isaiah, who said:††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††
A voice of one crying out in the wilderness: "Prepare the way for the Lord; make His paths straight!"
4 John himself had a camel‑hair garment with a leather belt around his waist, and his food was locusts and
wild honey. ††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††
5 Then people from Jerusalem, all Judea, and all the vicinity of the Jordan were flocking to him,
6 and they were baptized by him in the Jordan River as they confessed their sins.
John comes from out near the Northern edge of the Red Sea.† He followed the Lordís direction with a††
specific message to prepared the way of the Lord.† This was the prophecy of Malachi, John fulfills it.†† As He calls for the people to repent.† He dressed in a strange kind of clothing but his message was right on target.† There was a flock of people who came out to hear him from Jerusalem and as they did they confessed their sins and agreed to baptism in the Jordan river.
2.†† The Way Prepared As John Calls the . . Sadducees and Pharisees to Repent.†† 3:7-10
A.†† The . . Showing of Repentance Is Required.††† 1:7-8
7 When he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to the place of his baptism, he said to them,
"Brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?
8 Therefore produce fruit consistent with repentance.
B.††† The . . Showing of Repentance Is Required.††† 1:9-10
9 And don't presume to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father.' For I tell you that God is able
to raise up children for Abraham from these stones!
10 Even now the ax is ready to strike the root of the trees! Therefore every tree that doesn't produce good
fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.
As the Pharisees and Sadducee came to Johnís Baptism John said, ďto them, "Brood of vipers! Who warned
you to flee from the coming wrath? Therefore produce fruit consistent with repentance.Ē† The Pharisees and
Sadducee would automatically think they were okay for a baptism because they had Abraham for their
Father.† However John did not accept that.† He wanted a relationship with Jesus Christ.† This would be
demonstrated by the fruit their lives produced.† John was introducing Jesus as He prepared the way for Him.
John was Godís person for this job.† Jesus said this about John, "I assure you: Among those born of
women no one greater than John the Baptist has appeared,"† Matt 11:11† (HCSB.)
3.†† The Way Prepared As John Calls Attention To the . . Superiority of Jesus.†† 3:11-12
A.†† The Superiority of Jesus Is Shown As John . . Shares about Him.†† 1:11
11 "I baptize you with water for repentance, but the One who is coming after me is more powerful than I.
I am not worthy to take off His sandals. He Himself will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
B.††† The Superiority of Jesus Is Shown As John Shares about Him . . Separating.†† 1:12
12 His winnowing shovel is in His hand, and He will clear His threshing floor and gather His wheat into the
barn. But the chaff He will burn up with fire that never goes out."
John pointed out the superiority of Jesus claiming that Jesus exceed him in everything.† John said he was not worthy even to take off Jesus sandals.† He told the people Jesus would baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire.† This baptism was obviously superior to a simple baptism in water although it is part of Godís plan and desire.
The baptism in water done by Jesus is one of spiritual quality.† It does not happen without the New Birth.† Did you know Baptism does not cause the forgiveness of sins?† Jesus forgave sins at times with out baptism.
Look up these versesĒ† (Matt 9:1‑7; Luke 7:36‑50; 18:9‑14;).† This truth should erase the thought of those who claim baptism causes salvation.
