Being Prepared Eph 6:10-24     Nov. 28, 2010

Have you noticed the sequence of the spiritual armor? Truth is first then righteousness, followed by peace. Please note in other scriptures peace always come last. Peace is a bi-product of truth and righteousness. It is interesting our feet have sandals of peace. We don’t want war but peace. This will help us in Being Prepared.

1.   Being Prepared Recognizes The . . Enemy We Face. 6:10-12

       A.   Our Enemy Causes Us To Know We Need The . . Strength Of The Lord. 6:10-11

10 Finally, be strengthened by the Lord and by His vast strength. 11 Put on the full armor of God so that

you can stand against the tactics of the Devil.

       B.   Our Enemy Causes Us To Know We Have A . . Spiritual Battle. 6:12

12 For our battle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the

world powers of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavens.

All Christians need to realize we face a spiritual battle and our enemy is Satan. If we plan to win the battles we must engage in them with the strength of the Lord. Paul urges us to get prepared for this conflict. Many times we think our battle is with some human individuals, but they will just be the ploy of Satan and working for him. How do you win a spiritual battle? You must rely on Him who is the most powerful One in the Spirit realm and gain strength from Him.

2.   Being Prepared Recognizes The . . Equipment We Must Wear. 6:13-17

       A.   Our Equipment Gives Us Ability To . . Stand. 6:13-14

13 This is why you must take up the full armor of God, so that you may be able to resist in the evil

day, and having prepared everything, to take your stand. Stand, therefore, with truth like a belt around your

waist, righteousness like armor on your chest,

       B.   Our Equipment Protects Us In Every . . Situation. 6:15-17

15 and our feet sandaled with readiness for the gospel of peace. 16 In every situation take the shield of faith, and with it you will be able to extinguish the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is God's word.

If you are going to be involved in sports you must learn what kind of equipment you need for the game. Big time football players need pads and helmets. A baseball player will have a particular kind of shoes, as does a basketball player. In a spiritual battle you need special armor. The text says, “put on the whole armor of God.” This armor helps us to, “. . . stand against the tactics of the Devil.” We are encouraged to take truth, righteousness, peace, a shield of faith, a helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit (the Word of God).

I like the phrase , “having prepared everything, to take your stand. Stand, therefore.. .” This equipment being used by a spiritual person will help in every situation.

3.   Being Prepared Recognizes The . . Energy Available To Us. 6:18-20

       A.   The Energy Available Helps Us To . . Stay Alert. 6:18

18 With every prayer and request, pray at all times in the Spirit, and stay alert in this, with all

perseverance and intercession for all the saints.

       B.   The Energy Available Helps Us To . . Share with Others. 6:19

19 Pray also for me, that the message may be given to me when I open my mouth to make known with boldness the mystery of the gospel.

       C.   The Energy Available Helps Us To . . Speak As We Should. 6:20

20 For this I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I might be bold enough in Him to speak as I should.

We have energy available to help us and it comes from the Spirit. This energy directs us in staying alert. This energy also enables us to share with others and help them in spiritual battles they may have. Paul asked the believers of his day to pray for him that he might speak as he should. We need an alertness for our personal needs but also of other faithful believers. Can you imagine Paul needed support in prayer so he might speak as he should? Obviously he did and since he did we, and other Christians of this day, likewise need the prayer support of others so we might speak with boldness God’s message.

4.   Being Prepared Recognizes The . . Encouragement from Beloved Brothers. 6:21-24

       A.   The Encouragement God Gives Us . . Influences Others. 6:20-21

21 Tychicus, our dearly loved brother and faithful servant in the Lord, will tell you everything so that you also may know how I am and what I'm doing. 22 I am sending him to you for this very reason, to let you know how we are and to encourage your hearts.

       B.   The Encouragement God Gives Us . . Inspires Us. 6:23-24

23 Peace to the brothers, and love with faith, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 24 Grace be with all who have undying love for our Lord Jesus Christ. HCSB

While being prepared for spiritual battles we will receive encouragement from God to influence others as we grow in His grace. All of us may know a more experienced believer who has influenced us in our Christian walk and we need to do the same as we mature in the faith. Have other believers actions ever inspired you?

I think most of us could say others faithfulness inspired us. All of this spiritual activity guides and helps us in Being Prepared . Amen? Amen!
