Being Pure     Eph. 5:1-14     Oct. 31, 2010

I wonder if you ever heard about the experiment a health teacher gave one night at a PTA meeting? She had arranged for all the people to share some refreshments and one special guest had a special marking on his hands. As he tried to shake hands he got a marking on everyone but the few who wore gloves. When every one got back to their seats she asked them to look at their hands and asked how many of you have a mark on your hands. Every one but the guests pre-arranged to wear gloves had the mark. There was one other man who did not shake hands. He was in favor of abstinence and to the embarrassment of the teacher proved his point for Being Pure.

1.   Desire To Be Pure; Live . . Copying Christ. 5:1-2

       A.   Copy Christ As A . . Witness Of Love. 5:1

1 Therefore, be imitators of God, as dearly loved children.

       B.   Copy Christ As A . . Walk Of Love. 5:2

2 And walk in love, as the Messiah also loved us and gave Himself for us, a sacrificial and fragrant offering to God.

We can imitate Christ because we know He loves us and that motivates us to copy Him. It causes us joy to be a witness of what Christ has done and is doing in our lives. The quality of Jesus’ love in our daily lifestyle

will permeate our society. Too few people have consistently seen Christ-like conduct. They think their way of living is not that much different from ours. About the only difference they see is that Christians go to church.

If we desire to be pure we will want to copy Christ.

2.   Desire To Be Pure; Live In . . Contrast To The World. 5:3-7

       A.   Contrast Because It Is . . Proper For Saints. 5:3-4

3 But sexual immorality and any impurity or greed should not even be heard of among you, as is proper

for saints. 4 And coarse and foolish talking or crude joking are not suitable, but rather giving thanks.

       B.   Contrast Because We Deny Such A . . Partnership. 5:5-7

5 For know and recognize this: no sexually immoral or impure or greedy person, who is an idolater, has an inheritance in the kingdom of the Messiah and of God. 6 Let no one deceive you with empty arguments, for because of these things God's wrath is coming on the disobedient. 7 Therefore, do not become their partners.

In Paul’s world the society expresses greed, sexual immorality and impurities of every kind. How different is the world we live in today? It has gotten worse and seems to be bent on getting even worse. Children hear and do things today most adults did not even know about 50 years ago. This way of living is not proper for the saints. By the way you did know if you are saved you are a saint. Don’t you? We need to demonstrate a way of living that gives a significant contrast because we are in partnership with the Lord, not the world.

3.   Desire To Be Pure Live As . . Children Of Light. 5:8-14

       A.   Children Of Light Through His . . Truth. 5:8-10

8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light— 9 for the fruit of the light results in all goodness, righteousness, and truth— 10 discerning what is pleasing to the Lord.

       B.   Children Of Light Through His . . Transformation. 5:11-14

11 Don't participate in the fruitless works of darkness, but instead, expose them. 12 For it is shameful even to mention what is done by them in secret. 13 Everything exposed by the light is made clear,

14 for what makes everything clear is light. Therefore it is said: Get up, sleeper, and rise up from the

dead, and the Messiah will shine on you. HCSB

The truth of God can help us live pure lives. Truth causes light in many situations. The truth can act as a light in a dark place. Have you ever tried to do something the wrong way and when the right way was revealed

it made a significant difference. This light makes it clear how to please the Lord in you daily life. Truth also transforms. I hope you have witnessed people coming to the light out of darkness and seeing the transformation it makes in their total life. I have seen men and women come out of a rather sinful lifestyle and be transformed into children of light and heard their testimony of how the Lord made all things new. They enjoy the new life of Being Pure. Amen? Amen!
