Scattered! Gen. 11:1-9 Oct. 11, 2015

Do you personally wonder about our nation and its attention toward the things of God? Many churches have to notice the decline in attendance or simply coming to a plateau in the numbers of people worshiping. Does it appear that we are being Scattered.

1. Scattered Because of a . . Sinful Purpose. 11:1-4

A. The Sinful Purpose of . . Neglecting God. 11:1-3

1 At one time the whole earth had the same language and vocabulary.

2 As people migrated from the east, they found a valley in the land of Shinar and settled there.

3 They said to each other, "Come, let us make oven‑fired bricks." They had brick for stone and asphalt for

B. The Sinful Purpose of Desiring A . . Name for Themself. 11:4

4 And they said, "Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the sky. Let us make a name

for ourselves; otherwise, we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth."

As you look at our Nation you can see there is a decline. I think it is because we have forgotten God. The nation of our text got busy with their plans without any inclusion for God and His plans. They wanted to be very big and thought they could even build a tower reaching to God. They desired to make a name for them selves but never considered the thoughts or plans of God. They wanted to make a name for their group of people. They were afraid they would be scattered all over the whole earth. Their fear became a reality but not as they thought it would. We need to always seek to know the plans of God for our individual lives and our nation. And then do our best to follow them.

2. Surveyed By God . . Investigating Their Plans. 11:5

A. The Investigation of . . Godless People. 11:5a

5 Then the Lord came down to look over the city. . .

B. The Investigation of . . Godless Plans. 11:5b

. . . and the tower that the men were building.

Does God have to come down to find out what is going on in the Earth? Obviously not, but this is an emphasis of speech, as they were trying to get a tower to go up to God He came down! If people want to know about God and His plans He is available to those who seek Him. Some of the great stories in history relate the happenings of people who were seeking to be closer to God and sought revival for their land. Southern Baptists

at our last convention turned the Tuesday Night service over completely to prayer. If the requested revival takes place in America I think our convention will have played a significant part in God allowing birth to it. No one that I know, including myself, does enough toward calling this nation back to God. One wonders if there are not places and emphasis that are guilty of drawing people away from God.

3. Scattered Because of Gods Desires To . . Separate the Peoples. 11:6-9

A. The Separating of the Peoples By . . Confusing The Languages. 11:6-7

6 The Lord said, "If, as one people all having the same language, they have begun to do this, then nothing

they plan to do will be impossible for them.

7 Come, let Us go down there and confuse their language so that they will not understand one

another's speech."

B. The Separating of the Peoples By . . Confounding The Languages. 11:6-7

8 So the Lord scattered them from there over the face of the whole earth, and they stopped building the city.

9 Therefore its name is called Babylon, for there the Lord confused the language of the whole earth, and

from there the Lord scattered them over the face of the whole earth. HCSB

The people were going about their own plans so they would not be scattered and God caused them to be scattered. They were seeking to become a people above God without questioning His desires or plans. God came to them and confused their languages so they spoke many languages and not just one. God confused their languages so they could not understand one another, What a simple way to accomplish your desire for a group of people. This confusion of tongues obviously confounded them and they could not accomplish their plans.

Because of the mix-up in their tongues they could not get accomplished their desires or plans and God scattered them all over the then known earth. It certainly was a time when people were Scattered!
