God Is Great     Psa. 135:1-18     Sept. 27, 2009

One commentator finds 20 reasons to praise God in these 18 verses. We are told to praise the name of the Lord, sing praise to His name, and just plain bless the Lord. Find a person of praise and you will find a happy person who people enjoy being around. These people praise because they believe God Is Great.

1.   God Is Great: Praise Him For His . . Goodness. Psa. 135:1-4

       A.   Praise The Lord For His Good . . Name. Psa 135:1-2

Praise the name of the LORD. Give praise, you servants of the LORD 2 who stand in the house of the LORD, in the courts of the house of our God.

       B.   Praise The Lord For His Goodness In . . Nomination. Psa 135:3-4

3 Praise the LORD, for the LORD is good; sing praise to His name, for it is delightful. 4 For the LORD

has chosen Jacob for Himself, Israel as His treasured possession.

Do you love to say, sing and hear the name of Jesus? I do. One of my favorite hymns declares “Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, sweetest name I know.” In one of my pastorates we put up a new marquee type of sign and the first wording we put up said, “Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, sweetest name I know.” The psalmist praised God for choosing Israel as His treasured possession. We can praise Him because He also chose us for salvation. In praise of our salvation let us boldly share with others. God is great let us thank Him for His goodness.

2.   God Is Great: Praise Him For His . . Greatness. Psa. 135:5-12

       A.   Praise The Lord For His Greatness In . . Creation. Psa 135:5-7

5 For I know that the LORD is great; our Lord is greater than all gods.6 The LORD does whatever He

pleases in heaven and on earth, in the seas and all the depths. 7 He causes the clouds to rise from the ends of the earth. He makes lightning for the rain and brings the wind from His storehouses.

       B.   Praise The Lord For His Greatness In . . Conquering. Psa 135:8-12

8 He struck down the firstborn of Egypt, both people and animals.9 He sent signs and wonders against

you, Egypt, against Pharaoh and all his officials.10 He struck down many nations and slaughtered mighty kings:11 Sihon king of the Amorites, Og king of Bashan, and all the kings of Canaan.12 He gave their land as an inheritance, an inheritance to His people Israel.

We need to admire the beauty of creation and praise God for it. The details of creation are almost unbelievable. How anyone of intelligence doesn’t believe in an Intelligent Designer for all of creation is beyond me. In addition to His creating power we also see His ability as a conqueror. The movie the Ten Commandments portrays in a masterful way how God struck down the firstborn of Egypt but because of the blood sacrifice passed over the homes of the people of Israel. In addition; many kings and kingdoms have fallen as God empowered His children for battle. One of my favorite stories we find recorded in Isaiah. It is about Sennacherib as he threatens King Hezekiah. The king took the threat to the Temple and laid it out before the Lord and said, “hear all the words that Sennacherib has sent to mock the living God” (Isa. 37:17). Now look up what God told that king. (Isa. 37:33-35). God Is Great let us thank Him for His greatness.

3.   God Is Great: Praise Him For His Being The . . Greatest. Psa. 135:13-18

       A.   Praise The Lord For His Being Greatest In . . Endurance. Psa 135:13-14

13 LORD, Your name endures forever, Your reputation, LORD, through all generations. 14 For the

LORD will judge His people and have compassion on His servants.

       B.   Praise The Lord For His Being Greatest In . . Expertise. Psa 135:15-18

15 The idols of the nations are of silver and gold, made by human hands.16 They have mouths, but

cannot speak, eyes, but cannot see.17 They have ears, but cannot hear; indeed, there is no breath in their mouths.18 Those who make them are just like them, as are all who trust in them. HCSB

You can look down the corridors of history and see it is lined with many so-called “gods.” The endurance of our God lasts beyond all other gods. He existed in the beginning and does not have a creator. Therefore His endurance is eternal. No other manmade god can make a claim like that. Our God’s expertise in speech, sight,

and hearing, far exceeds the manmade gods. Our God did not have to be made or empowered. Manmade gods did not create anything or give power to anything. How can something a man makes be superior to him? We must recognize the superiority of our God. He is the greatest! Let us thank Him for being the greatest! Yes our God Is Great. Amen? Amen!
