Living As Strangers      1 Peter 2:11-20      Sept. 25, 2016

Most of us have had experiences of being exposed in relationships with strangers.  It may be in a new school, a new neighborhood, a new job, or a new church.   In our text we are given some guidelines for our lifestyle in these situations.   We are to be honorable, humble, and submissive as we are Living As Strangers in our world.  We need to follow the teachings of scripture as we live in our world and are trying to be a witness for Christ.

1.   Conduct Yourself . . Honorably Among the Gentiles.   2:11-12

A.   Honorably by . . Abstaining from Fleshly Desires.    2:11

11 Dear friends, I urge you as aliens and temporary residents to abstain from fleshly desires that war against you.   Generally a attitude that is honorable, humble and generally submissive

B.    Honorably by . . Adding to your Good Works.     2:12

12 Conduct yourselves honorably among the Gentiles, so that in a case where they speak against you as those who do evil, they may, by observing your good works, glorify God in a day of visitation.

If Christians seek to influence our society and stand for the lifestyle that Christ request we must abstain from fleshly desires.   If our lifestyles are like the world rather than Christ we will not influence

our world like we should.  Our life styles need to produce good works so the world will notice the good things Christ has inspired us to do.  As I have gone door to door in a community some will tell me about the actions of some Christian in the community who did not represent Christ very well.  I have always tried to respond with the actions like some Christians that have displayed the kind of life Christ produces in them.

2.   Conduct Yourself . . Humbly To Officials and Leaders. 2:13-17

A.   Be Humble to . . Institutions.      2:13-15

13 Submit to every human institution because of the Lord, whether to the Emperor as the supreme authority,

14 or to governors as those sent out by him to punish those who do evil and to praise those who do good.

15 For it is God's will that you, by doing good, silence the ignorance of foolish people.

B.    Be Humble to . . Everyone.      2:16-17

16 As God's slaves, live as free people, but don't use your freedom as a way to conceal evil.

17 Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the Emperor.

A humble attitude certainly patterns the life of Christ.   We have governments and institutions that are seeking to make a better community and we should seek to be humble in our efforts to blend in with the governments desire for the betterment of our community.  If it would be our lot to live where governments are not proposing a lifestyle that we believe will really cause a better society.  We must live so our lifestyle will

be noticed and recommend to them what Christ has done.   If we have a correct behavior we might silence the ignorance of foolish people.   Our life style needs to honor God with a humble attitude.

3.   Conduct Yourself . . Submissively to Your Masters.   2:18-20

A.   Household Slaves Need to Be Submissive to their . . Masters.      2:18-19

18 Household slaves, submit yourselves to your masters with all respect, not only to the good and gentle but

also to the cruel.

19 For it brings favor if, because of conscience toward God, someone endures grief from suffering unjustly.

B.    Household Slaves Need to Be Submissive to their . . Masters.      2:20

20 For what credit is there if you endure when you sin and are beaten? But when you do good and suffer, if you endure, it brings favor with God.

The word submissive has a bad reputation in some circles.  Some women’s groups have the wrong interpretation of submission.  The Bible does tell us to be submissive.  The submissive life style is the correct lifestyle in several situations.  Most, if not all of us, need to be submissive to those in authority with positions over us.  In our homes many positions has some authority that others need to be submissive to.   In our text household slaves are to be submissive to their masters even if the master has been cruel.  Our text tells us when our actions are submissive to an unkind or cruel person God takes note of it and it will bring His favor to us.

Most of us have seen someone handle their authority in an incorrect manner.  We are to still try to act properly and according to the word of God as we are Living As Strangers!  Amen?  Amen!
