Is This Of God 1 John 4:1-6 HCSB June 28, 2015

How can we know if something is of God. When we commit our life to Him in Christ we

are given the Spirit of God. Since then the presence of God resides in our life. He gives us direction and a sense of belonging to God. We will grow in our ability to discern between the Spirit of God and other spirits that might try to persuade us.

1. Is This of God? . . Be Discerning. 4:1

A. Be Discerning Because of . . Fake Spirits. 1a

1 Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to determine if they are from

God, . . .

B. Be Discerning Because of . . False Prophets. 1b

. . . because many false prophets have gone out into the world.

If we are interested in knowing if something is of God we must be discerning and test the spirits. Several times opinions can be made known and sound very appealing from sources that

we cannot appreciate because our influence from the Spirit of God causes us to be very skeptable because the Holy Spirit knows this source is from a false spirit. This is another reason to have close Christian friends who will help you identify that which is from God. Many times the teacher or opposing prophet will prove himself as one who is not from God by what he teaches and the Holy Spirit we have telling us this is wrong.

2. Is This of God? . . Be Decisive. 4:2-3

A. Be Decisive Check . . Their Confession. 2

2 This is how you know the Spirit of God: Every spirit who confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God.

B. Be Decisive Check . . Their Confession. 3

3 But every spirit who does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist; you have heard that he is coming, and he is already in the world now.

We need to be discerning and decisive. The text tells us how to know the Spirit of God. He must inspire and lead us to believe Jesus and the truth that Jesus came in the flesh and we need to confess Him as our Lord and Savior. The false spirit does not confess Jesus is from God. Those who have that spirit have the spirit of antichrist and we who have the Spirit of God should recognize it more easily than others. The Holy Spirit in us gives us a reference at all times so we can judge correctly. Some times we have a negative spirit and that may very well be the Holy Spirit leading us to think negatively about what we need to make a judgement. Jesus did not shrink from making judgement and neither should we.

3. Is This of God? . . Be Discriminating. 4:4-6

A. Be Discriminating Through Your . . Birth.

4 You are from God, little children, and you have conquered them, because the One who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.

B. Be Discriminating Through Your . . Beliefs. 4:5-6

5 They are from the world. Therefore what they say is from the world, and the world listens to them.

6 We are from God. Anyone who knows God listens to us; anyone who is not from God

does not listen to us. From this we know the Spirit of truth and the spirit of deception.

We need to be discerning, decisive and discriminating. Our new birth gives the presence of the Holy Spirit and causes us to know we know the Lord. He is in us and therefore we think differently than some who have not been twice born. Because we have the Spirit He leads us to believe differently. Today there is a big difference in what the world believes and what Christians hold as true. Our world really speaks poorly of us if we stand up strong for what we believe. They simply do not understand Christians but when we stand up we believe we stand up because we say yes to the question Is This Of God? Amen? Amen!
