Worship No Other      April 30, 2006      Isa. 44:156-22; 46:1-5, 8-9 (HCSB)

The first four of the Ten Commandments guide us in the worship of God. They direct obedience so to these percepts and will enables us to Worship No Other. Our lives will be blessed if we are obedient, and blessing will be taken away if we disobey.

1.       Because Counterfeit Worship . .Blinds. Isaiah 44:16-20

            A.        Counterfeit Worship Blinds With . . Gratification. 44:16

16 He burns half of it in a fire, and he roasts meat on that half. He eats the roast and

is satisfied. He warms himself and says, “Ah! I am warm, I see the blaze.”

            B.        Counterfeit Worship Blinds With . . Glorification. 44:17

                        17 He makes a god or his idol with the rest of it. He bows down to it and worships;

He prays to it, “Save me, for you are my god.”

            C.        Counterfeit Worship Blinds from . . Godly Wisdom. 44:18-20

18 Such people do not comprehend and cannot understand, for He has shut their eyes

so they cannot see, and their minds so they cannot understand. 19 No one reflects, no one

has the perception or insight to say, “I burned half of it in the fire, I also baked bread on its

coals, I roasted meat and ate. I will make something detestable with the rest of it, and I will

bow down to a block of wood.” 20 He feeds on ashes. [His] deceived mind has led him

astray, and he cannot deliver himself, or say, “Isn’t there a lie in my right hand?”

We ought to easily see the emphasis of counterfeit worship seeks to gratify, and

glorify the flesh. It seeks to turn us away from a true and godly type of worship. Most if not all

temptations center in the desires of the flesh. If Satan can give gratification to our flesh we are susceptible to further sin. In the text the belly was gratified, and an idol came out of it. In this case it seems very silly for this person to worship the idol he makes for wood. But is that not true of all kinds of idols? When a mind is focused on false worship it may not see the significant differences in godly worship. Why? Because Satan blinds them note, “the god of this age has blinded . . . so they cannot see. . . .” 2Co 4:4 (HCSB)

2.       Because Correct Worship . . Blesses. Isaiah 44:21-22

            A.        Correct Worship Blesses Through . . Remembering. 44:21

21 Remember these things, Jacob, and Israel, for you are My servant; I formed you,

you are My servant; Israel, you will never be forgotten by Me.

            B.        Correct Worship Blesses Through . . Redemption. 44:21

22 I have swept away your transgressions like a cloud, and your sins like a mist.

Return to Me, for I have redeemed you.

Correct worship will cause people to remember the care, and enjoy the redemption of their God. God chose the Jewish people, and He likewise chose us. He expects all of His children to serve Him. Remembering His actions on our behalf should prompt us to be faithful. The ultimate reason for worship, and service focuses on redemption. How can sin be cancelled except through the plan of God accomplished through the sacrifice of Christ? Yes we must, Worship No Other; because through correct worship God blesses.

3.       Because Contemptible Worship . .Burdens. Isaiah 46:1-2

            A.        Contemptible Worship Burdens Rather Than . . Relieves. 46:1

1 Bel crouches; Nebo cowers. Their idols are consigned to beasts and cattle. The

[images] you carry are loaded, as a burden for the weary [animal] .

            B.        Contemptible Worship Burdens Rather Than . . Rescues. 46:2

2 The gods cower; they crouch together; they are not able to rescue the burden, but

            they themselves go into captivity.

Some worship practices God views as contemptible. These contemptible worship practices

do not relieve burdens but add to them. The do not rescue from the bondage of sin but lead into captivity. It would seem anyone giving thoughtful reasoning to their choice of one to worship would choose our God. Bt the flesh is attracted to contemptible worship practices.

4.       Because Commanded Worship . . Bolsters. Isaiah 46:3-5, 8-9

            A.        Commanded Worship Bolsters With . . Sameness. 46:3-4

3 “Listen to Me, house of Jacob, all the remnant of the house of Israel, who have

been sustained from the womb, carried along since birth.

4 I will be the same until [your] old age, and I will bear [you] up when you turn gray. I

have made [you] , and I will carry [you] ; I will bear and save [you] .

            B.        Commanded Worship Bolsters With . . Superiority. 46:5

5 “Who will you compare Me or make Me equal to? Who will you measure Me

with, so that we should be like each other?

            C.        Commanded Worship Bolsters With . . Stable Thinking. 46:5

8 “Remember this and be brave; take it to heart, you transgressors! 9 Remember

what happened long ago, for I am God, and there is no other; [I am] God, and no one is like

The worship we are commanded to give bolsters us through the sameness, and superiority of our God. The sameness of God leads us to have centuries of examples to appreciate, and learn from.

In addition the worship we are commanded to give causes us to think in a stable manner. A minister friend told me his mother taught him “horse sense, was just good stable thinking.” Looking over the reasons to worship God causes one to realize they have been using stable thinking. Truly we must Worship No Other. Amen? Amen!
