Share New Life Luke 24:1-6, 36-49 April 08, 2007
Truth is not tolerant of error. Suppose an archeological discovery occurs tomorrow that some mathematician wrote down, 2 + 2 equals three. What impact do you think it would make on the mathematical community? It would be deemed a mistake, and forgotten. Why? Truth can not live with error. Recently a so called documentary presented the proposition that Jesus was buried with others, supposedly, His family members. How does the evangelical community view this documentary? They rebuke the premise used as error, and speculation. Why? Because of Biblical evidence, and the truth in our hearts. A Jesus who does not resurrect as the Bible teaches will not be the Jesus from whom we Share New Life.
1. Share New Life; Focusing On The . . Surprises Of The Resurrection. 24:1-6a
A. The Surprise By The . . Empty Tomb. 24:1-3
1 On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came to the tomb, bringing the spices
they had prepared.
2 They found the stone rolled away from the tomb.
3 They went in but did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.
B. The Surprise By The . . Encounter With Angels. 24:4-5
4 While they were perplexed about this, suddenly two men stood by them in dazzling clothes.
5 So the women were terrified and bowed down to the ground. “Why are you looking for the living
among the dead?” asked the men.
C. The Surprise By The . . Exhilaration Of The Angels. 24:6
6 “He is not here, but He has been resurrected! Remember how He spoke to you when He was still in
When the ladies went to the tomb of Jesus they discovered many surprises. Encountering
Angels who were exhilarated surprised them. Their surprise adds to the authenticity of the story,
because they were convinced by the evidence. Since Jesus is alive we can share the life he gives.
2. Share New Life; Focusing On The . . Sights Of The Resurrection. 24:36-43
A. The Sights Surrounding Our Resurrected Lord’s . . Appearance. 24:36-37
36 And as they were saying these things, He Himself stood among them. He said to them,
“Peace to you!”
37 But they were startled and terrified and thought they were seeing a ghost.
B. The Sights Surrounding Our Resurrected Lord’s . . Announcement. 24:38-40
38 “Why are you troubled?” He asked them. “And why do doubts arise in your hearts?
39 Look at My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself! Touch Me and see, because a ghost does not
have flesh and bones as you can see I have.”
40 Having said this, He showed them His hands and feet.
C. The Sights Surrounding The Disciples . . Amazement. 24:41-43
41 But while they still could not believe because of [their] joy and were amazed, He asked them, “Do
you have anything here to eat?”
42 So they gave Him a piece of a broiled fish,
43 and He took it and ate in their presence.
One of our great gospel songs gives a phrase like this, “and oh the sites I saw.” The ladies would sing that phrase as they saw Jesus. He said, “peace to you.” I believe His appearance gave them a peace like they never experienced before. Then the Lord’s announcement to them asked, “Why are you troubled?” He then
encouraged them to touch His nail scars. He assured them His body was real, and not that of a ghost. What a sight, and they must have been amazed. Then the Lord asked them for something to eat. No doubt Jesus had eaten some of their cooking before.
3. Share New Life; Focusing On The . . Scriptures And Resurrection. 24:44-47
A. The Scriptures and Resurrection Speak Of . . Fulfillment Of Scripture. 24:44
44 Then He told them, “These are My words that I spoke to you while I was still with you—that
everything written about Me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets, and the Psalms must be fulfilled.”
B. The Scriptures and Resurrection Speak Of . . Features Of scripture. 24:45-46
45 Then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures.
46 He also said to them, “This is what is written: the Messiah would suffer and rise from the dead the
C. The Scriptures and Resurrection Speak Of . . Forgiveness Through Resurrection. 24:47
47 and repentance for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in His name to all the nations,
beginning at Jerusalem.
The scriptures are very important as we think about the resurrection. We must never base our theology on our experiences but on the living Word of God. Note the words, “must be fulfilled.” Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection fulfill the scriptures. The features of the resurrection were clearly displayed in the scriptures, and when someone realizes God forgave their sin, they know our living-resurrected Lord caused it. No other gods forgive sin; only the living Lord Jesus possesses that power. This truth needs to be proclaimed in all the world.
4. Share New Life; Focusing On The . . Sending And Resurrection. 24:48-49
A. The Sending, Resurrection And The . . Proclamation. 24:48
48 You are witnesses of these things.
B. The Sending, Resurrection And The . . Power. 24:49
49 And look, I am sending you what My Father promised. As for you, stay in the city until you are empowered from on high.”
Because Christians possess the knowledge and experience of salvation, the Lord sends us to proclaim that truth. We not only have head knowledge but we also enjoy His presence in our hearts. The Lord realizes how difficult being a witness can be, so He empowers us to share. He told the disciples to tarry in Jerusalem until they received this power. After the day of Pentecost, all believers received this power when they welcome
Christ into their lives. We need to be eager to Share New Life! Amen? Amen!
