Approaching The King

Introduction†††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††† ††††††††††††††††††††††††††††

The teachings of Jesus about prayer are simple and straight to the point. When we follow His teaching

we are well on our way to a fine time of prayer.Jesus tells us in this time of teaching to be careful to not get lengthy in our much speaking. Some people in Jesusí day thought many words meant a fine prayer.Jesus told us God knows our needs before we ask and does not need many words to better understand.†† This is a helpful lesson as we are Approaching The King.

1.†† Jesus Teaches about . . Rewards and Prayer.†† 6:5-6 ††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††

A.†† God Does Not Reward . . Self Seeking Prayers.†††

5 "Whenever you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites, because they love to pray standing

in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by people. I assure you: They've got their

B.††† God Does Reward . . Secret Prayers to Him.†† 6:6

6 But when you pray, go into your private room, shut your door, and pray to your Father who is

in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

Have you ever observed someone who seemed to pray to be seen.It is obvious to most people and is rejected by men and surely by God.In contrast what about a new Christian happy in the Lord? They bring a smile to people and certainly to God as they pray.I donít think about rewards in my prayer life, but obedience.I know rewards are given by the Lord but to be able to pray seems to be enough.Just to know we can bow our head and God will listen in Jesus name.

2.†† Jesus Teaches about . . Realities and Prayer.†† 6:7-12

†††† A.†† Jesus Teaches Prayer Is Not a Matter of Many . . Words.†† 6:7-8

7 When you pray, don't babble like the idolaters, since they imagine they'll be heard for their

many words.

8 Don't be like them, because your Father knows the things you need before you ask Him.

†††† B.††† Jesus Teaches Prayer Is A Matter of. . Wise Words Directed to Him.†† 6:9-10

9 "Therefore, you should pray like this: Our Father in heaven, Your name be

honored as holy.

10 Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

C.†† Jesus Teaches Prayer Is A Matter of . . Wisdom.†† 6:11-12

11 Give us today our daily bread.

12 And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.

Certainly prayer is not a matter of many words and that is especially true at meal time. The model prayer is not a long list of words but to the point and in a proper heart relationship with the Lord.Prayer is directed to the Father, with a offering of Praise, requesting His Will to be done.We will request our daily needs and realize wisdom in prayer recognizes we need to forgive as we also ask for forgiveness.

3.†† Jesus Teaches about Prayer and . . Forgiveness.†† 6:13-15

†††† A.†† Jesus Teaches About Temptation, Deliverance and . . Requirement for Forgiveness.†† 6:13-14

13 And do not bring us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. [For Yours is the kingdom

and the power and the glory forever. Amen.]

14 "For if you forgive people their wrongdoing, your heavenly Father will forgive you as well.

†††† B.††† Jesus Teaches About Forgiveness and . . Requesting of Forgiveness.†† 6:15

15 But if you don't forgive people, your Father will not forgive your wrongdoing.

I tried to witness to a man for a few years. He came to church many times but would not forgive his wife for what he believed was adultery. He was the worse case I have ever seen.At 87 years of age he died in a car wreck and I preached his funeral knowing he never asked God for forgiveness. It was a sad time.

He knew God requested him to be forgiving before he could be forgiven but he refused.I am pleased I learned what Jesus taught about forgiveness at an early age.Of course I am still learning and enjoying the privilege.

4.†† Jesus Teaches about . . Fasting.†† 6:16-18

†††† A.†† Jesus Teaches Fasting People Need Not . . Display Themselves to People.†† 6:16

16 "Whenever you fast, don't be sad‑faced like the hypocrites. For they make their faces unattractive

so their fasting is obvious to people. I assure you: They've got their reward!

†††† B.††† Jesus Teaches Fasting People Need to . . Dedicate Themselves To God.†† 6:16

17 But when you fast, put oil on your head, and wash your face,

18 so that you don't show your fasting to people but to your Father who is in secret. And your Father

who sees in secret will reward you.†† (HCSB)

I have fasted on a few occasions but never wanted anyone but my wife to know about it.I never dressed or washed any different. It was a matter between me and the Lord.Jesus sad if we fast for people to see we have our reward. If we fast unto the Lord it will be a secret matter between He and us.†† God rewards openly. In this lesson we learn more about Approaching The King.Amen?Amen!
