SEVEN SAYINGS from the CROSS # 3
A THEOLOGY CONCERNING FAMILY. JOHN 19:26-27

v 26 When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He *said to His mother, "Woman, behold, your son!" 27 Then He *said to the disciple, "Behold, your mother!" And from that hour the disciple took her into his own {household.}

INTRODUCTION:
At this time the earthly father of Jesus named Joseph, most likely was dead. Jesus gives us an example of care for Parents. It is cccurious to note the Scriptures Do Not Record Jesus Saying Mother to Mary. He No Doubt Referred to Her Lovingly and Loved Her. But He Always Addressed Her as Woman.

I. A Theological Word to Jesus' Mother.

John 19:26-27 26 When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He *said to His mother, "Woman, behold, your son!" 27 Then He *said to the disciple, "Behold, your mother!" And from that hour the disciple took her into his own {household.}

A . . Distinctive Woman. Luke 1:34-35

34 And Mary Said To The Angel, "How Can This Be, Since I Am A Virgin?" 35 And The Angel Answered And Said To Her, "The Holy Spirit Will Come Upon You, And The Power Of The Most High Will Overshadow You; And For That Reason The Holy Offspring Shall Be Called The Son Of God.

Luk 1:43 "And How Has It {Happened} To Me, That The Mother Of My Lord Should Come To Me?

B. A . . Dedicated Woman.

Luk 2:19 But Mary Treasured Up All These Things, Pondering Them In Her Heart.

C. A . . Disciplined Woman.

Joh 19:25 Therefore The Soldiers Did These Things. But There Were Standing By The Cross Of Jesus His Mother, And His Mother's Sister, Mary The {Wife} Of Clopas, And Mary Magdalene.

Act 1:14 These All With One Mind Were Continually Devoting Themselves To Prayer, Along With {The} Women, And Mary The Mother Of Jesus, And With His Brothers.

D. A . . Distinguished Woman. Luke 11:27-28

27 And It Came About While He Said These Things, One Of The Women In The Crowd Raised Her Voice, And Said To Him, "Blessed Is The Womb That Bore You, And The Breasts At Which You Nursed." 28 But He Said, "On The Contrary, Blessed Are Those Who Hear The Word Of God, And Observe It."

Matt 2:11
11 And They Came Into The House And Saw The Child With Mary His Mother; And They Fell Down And Worshiped Him; And Opening Their Treasures They Presented To Him Gifts Of Gold And Frankincense And Myrrh.

Mat 12:48 But He Answered The One Who Was Telling Him And Said, "Who Is My Mother And Who Are My Brothers?"

Mat 12:49 And Stretching Out His Hand Toward His Disciples, He Said, "Behold, My Mother And My Brothers!

Mat 12:50 "For Whoever Does The Will Of My Father Who Is In Heaven, He Is My Brother And Sister And Mother."

F. A . . Downhearted Woman.

Luk 2:34 And Simeon Blessed Them, And Said To Mary His Mother, "Behold, This {Child} Is Appointed For The Fall And Rise Of Many In Israel, And For A Sign To Be Opposed--

Luk 2:35 And A Sword Will Pierce Even Your Own Soul-- To The End That Thoughts From Many Hearts May Be Revealed. "

1. DOWNHEARTED BECAUSE A CHILD SHE BORE IS IN PAIN.

a. MY MOM SAID I WISH I COULD HAVE THE SURGERY FOR YOU.

ILLUSTRATION:
In a seminary chapel at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary a pastor shared this illustration to give proof of the virgin birth. He asked if Mary loved her son, and she knew he was not the virgin born Son of God do you think she would have allowed Him to die such a cruel death, as she watched?

No! She would have cried out he is not the son of God. Take Him down and I will tell you about His real father. She did not do that because she could not do that. She knew He was the virgin born Son of God.

APPLICATION:

Jesus took care of His earthly Mother. You and I should be considerate of our Mothers.

II. A Theological Word to Jesus the Son.

v 26 When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He *said to His mother, "Woman, behold, your son!" 27 Then He *said to the disciple, "Behold, your mother!" And from that hour the disciple took her into his own {household.}

A. The Son's Separation.
1. The Beginning of the separation.
JOH 2:3 And when the wine gave out, the mother of Jesus *said to Him, "They have no wine." :4 And Jesus *said to her, "Woman, what do I have to do with you? My hour has not yet come."

2. The climax of the Separation' v 27
27 Then He *said to the disciple, "Behold, your mother!" And from that hour the disciple took her into his own {household.}

B. The Salvation provide through the Son Included His Mother.
LUK 11:27 And it came about while He said these things, one of the women in the crowd raised her voice, and said to Him, "Blessed is the womb that bore You, and the breasts at which You nursed."

LUK 11:28 But He said, "On the contrary, blessed are those who hear the word of God, and observe it."

MAT 2:11 And they came into the house and saw the Child with Mary His mother; and they fell down and worshiped Him; and opening their treasures they presented to Him gifts of gold and frankincense and myrrh.

MAT 12:48 But He answered the one who was telling Him and said, "Who is My mother and who are My brothers?"

MAT 12:49 And stretching out His hand toward His disciples, He said, "Behold, My mother and My brothers!

MAT 12:50 "For whoever does the will of My Father who is in heaven, he is My brother and sister and mother.".

1. MARY IS NOT THE QUEEN OF HEAVEN.

a. JOHN TAKES CARE OF HER

ILLUSTRATION:
In one of the New Testament classes I teach we were talking about the leaving and cleaving aspects of marriage. A young lady ask how do you get your husband to cut the apron string?

Some times the leaving is painful but it must be done.

APPLICATION:

Jesus had to be a son and he was a good son. But He also had to separate Himself from earthly ties.

III. A Theological Word to John
"BEHOLD YOUR MOTHER."

A. Submission FOR JESUS
MAT 15:4 "For God said, '\Honor your father and mother,\' and, '\He who speaks evil of father or mother, let him be put to death.\'

LUK 2:51 And He went down with them, and came to Nazareth; and He continued in subjection to them; and His mother treasured all {these} things in her heart.

B. Submission for John. v 27 b
JOH 19:27 b And from that hour the disciple took her into his own {household.}

C. Safety for Mary. v 27 b
JOH 19:27 b And from that hour the disciple took her into his own {household.}

ILLUSTRATION:
John Henry Jowett told about a small village where an elderly woman died. She died penniless, uneducated, unsophisticated, but during her lifetime her selfless service had made a tremendous impact for Christ. On her tombstone they chiseled the words, "She did what she couldn't."

That can be the epitaph for every Christian who will allow Christ to live through us: HE can do through us what we can never do ourselves.

APPLICATION:

Sometimes I have heard people looking at their family situations say "it is hopeless".

We can look at Christ example in these tender words relate to His earthly Mother and say we can do In Christ what we could not do alone.
