The Wisest Wise Man

Mt 1:19-25

19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not wanting to make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly. 20 But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. 21 And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins." 22 So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: 23 "Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel," which is translated, "God with us." 24 Then Joseph, being aroused from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took to him his wife, 25 and did not know her till she had brought forth her firstborn Son. And he called His name JESUS. NKJV

19 And Joseph her husband, being a righteous man and not wanting to disgrace her, planned to send her away secretly. 20 But when he had considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. 21 "She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins." 22 Now all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet: 23 "BEHOLD, THE VIRGIN SHALL BE WITH CHILD AND SHALL BEAR A SON, AND THEY SHALL CALL HIS NAME IMMANUEL," which translated means, "GOD WITH US." 24 And Joseph awoke from his sleep and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took Mary as his wife, 25 but kept her a virgin until she gave birth to a Son; and he called His name Jesus. How would you describe wisdom? The American Heritage Dictionary gives these definitions.

wisdom (w¹z"dm) n. 1. Understanding of what is true, right,

The comic strip Farside made the suggestion there was a forth Wise Man and the reason we never hear about him is that he did not bring gold, frankincense, or myrrh. He brought a fruitcake.

I want to present that Joseph was a wise man. He was wise in his choice of a wife. God knew Mary was His choice before Joseph knew she was his choice.

Two women relatives of General Lou Wallace who came to the White House when Lincoln was president asking about General Wallace. He had been involved in a vicious battle and they wanted to make sure he had survived.

After learning he had survived they spoke rather glibly of their gladness. There had been a casualty in the battle named Wallace but they were thankful that it was not "our Wallace." Lincoln responded soberly, "Yes, but it was somebody's Wallace, wasn't it?"

Thursday I heard one of our prominent pastor speak about mission involvement. He told of a very influential man in their church who they prevailed upon to lead a mission conference. This man refused. Later that day driving his car down the highway God reminded him of a commitment he made as a child to do all he could to tell the world about Jesus.

He came back to the church office and said "I will take that responsibility. I will take it because of a desire God put in my heart as a child. God has called In my desire and commitment as a child.

When the Wasp, one of America's great naval vessels in World War II, caught fire and began to sink, the sailors were ordered to abandon ship and swim away from the vessel immediately. They jumped overboard, but instead of trusting their well-tested life jackets for safety many clung to the sides of the ship. When the vessel plunged beneath the surface, these sailors were sucked down with it.

We as Christians make similar blunders in our relationship with Jesus. We tend to forget His instructions. Then when trials come, instead of relying on His promises we cling to false securities as those frightened sailors did. Or we look at our frightening circumstances and push the panic button.

Application

Today many people want to truth their lifestyle rather than Jesus.  The say "I've been a good person."
Joseph trusted The Word of God. He Concurred with God.

The naming of our daughter Teri was finally inspired from an apartment complex. Christa had thought about the name Teri and then we saw the Terri Lynn apartments. Our daughter Tami got her name because her sister loved the song and movie "Tammy" and I decided we would have a Teri Lynn and a Tami Lynn.

We chose a special spelling for our daughter Tami. I really had ordered a boy for our second child. I was going to name a boy after our pastor. His name was going to be Mack Douglas McCullen. My wife, Christa, did not like that choice and says that is why we did not have a boy child.

When Tami was about 5-6 she was looking in a gift shop for a name tag spelled Tami. She could never find one and was disappointed to the point of tears. I called her aside and reminded her I was expecting a boy when she was born and planned to name him Mack Douglas McCullen. She told me she knew all that.

Then I reminder her how she got the name Tami and that we chose to spell her name "Tami" because God had given us another special little girl. I told her the name was not on the name tags displays because they were made for most Tammy's and not special Tami's. With her big eyes looking up at me she said "really" and I told her "really" She never complained about Tammy Name Tags again.

Application

Joseph probably sat down with a little boy Jesus and told Him how he got His name. He may have said "Jesus you got your name as an angel appeared to me and told me to name you Jesus. You have come to save your people their sin.

You are not like other boys named Jesus you are special.
