4 Then he fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to him,

"Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?"

5 And he said, "Who are You, Lord?" Then the Lord said, "I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. It is hard for you to kick against the goads."

6 So he, trembling and astonished, said, "Lord, what do You want me to do?" NKJV

"Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?"

            A.        The . . Rebuke Of The Question.

"Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?"

            B.        The . . Requirement Of The Question.

"Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?"

                        1.         An Analysis Of Our Criticism Of Christians, and Christian Leaders.

9:5 Saul thought he was pursuing heretics, but he was persecuting Jesus himself. Anyone who persecutes believers today is also guilty of persecuting Jesus because believers are the body of Christ on earth. (from Life Application.)

            C.        The . . Reasonableness Of The Question.

"Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?"

                        1.         We can expect the Lord To Be Concerned When His Children Or Persecuted.

Saul thought he had been serving God, when in

reality he had been persecuting the Messiah!

            D.        The . . Reversal From The Normal Question.

                        1.         Normally People Ask God Why.

                        2.         Why an earthquake in Haiti?

                        3.         Why does a mother of 4 and a very busy worker for he Lord die?

                        4.         Why Is Christa Having Trouble After Surgery.

                        5.         Did you ever hear:

“God just doesn’t make sense To me.”

                        6.         I think Often Of This Scripture.         Isa 55:8-9

8 "For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways," says the Lord .

Application

The First Question Is Asked By The Lord; It Is A Question About . . Persecution.

2. The Second Question Is Asked By Paul:

          It Is A Question About . . Person. 9:5

And he said, "Who are You, Lord?" ? Then the Lord said, "I am Jesus, whom you are

persecuting. It is hard for you to kick against the goads."

A.        It Is A . . Personhood Question.

"Who are You, Lord?"?

            1.         Somebody Speaks With Knowledge and Authority

                        a.         He Knows Saul’s Name

                        b.         He Knows What He has been doing.

                        b.         Is It The Lord God Almighty?

B.        It Is A . . Perplexing Question.

"Who are You, Lord?"?

            1.         Finding that Jesus, whom he thought to be dead and buried, and whose followers he was so violently opposing, was yet alive, —

C.        It Is A . . Power Question.

"Who are You, Lord?"?

            1.         Somebody Has The Power Over The Light.

D.        It Includes A . . Probing To Paul.

“ It is hard for you to kick against the goads."

He said to Saul, "It is hard for thee." There was much pity in the rebuke. Saul was like a bullock that has been pricked by the sharp ox-goad, and that kicks against it, and so is hurt all the more. Our Lord knew what sorrow it would cause Saul in the years to come, for he would never cease to lament that he had persecuted the disciples of Christ.   This is not in some of your translations. I will explain in a moment

Bill Jetton, the DOM of the Cape Girardeau Baptist Association is a friend of Christa and I. His son Courts Jetton spoke here before he went to serve in Central Asia as one of our Missionaries. Bill came to see Christa and I in the hospital. We talked about many things and in the course of our conversation he said he told his oldest grandson before the family left to go to Central Asia, “why don’t you just stay here with your grandpa? We could have a lot of fun, fishing and going places together.” His grandson quickly said,  grandpa, I can’t do that.” Bill sort of surprised said, “why not” his grandson said, “because God told us to go tell the people in Russia about Jesus.”

In Our Text The Lord told Paul he was a messenger for Him.
