A New Name†††† Gen. 17:1-8, 15-22 HCSB†††† Nov. 01, 2015
On several occasions in the Bible people were given a new name.† The name given to them represented
their life for, and with, God.† If God wanted to change my name I would gladly accept that change.† I am a sinner saved by grace and a new man and it is A New Name.
1.†† A New Name As . . Godís Promise Is Given To Abram.†† 17:1-8
A.† Godís Promise To Abram A . . New Name.†† 17:1-5
1 When Abram was 99 years old, the Lord appeared to him, saying, "I am God Almighty. Live in My
presence and be devout.
2 I will establish My covenant between Me and you, and I will multiply you greatly."
3 Then Abram fell to the ground, and God spoke with him:
4 "As for Me, My covenant is with you, and you will become the father of many nations.
5 Your name will no longer be Abram, but your name will be Abraham, for I will make you the father of
B.† Godís Promise To Abram A . . New Land.†† 17:6-8
6 I will make you extremely fruitful and will make nations and kings come from you.
7 I will keep My covenant between Me and you, and your offspring after you throughout their generations,
as an everlasting covenant to be your God and the God of your offspring after you.
8 And to you and your offspring after you I will give the land where you are residingóall the land of
Canaanóas an eternal possession, and I will be their God."
My daughter and son-in-law have adopted 3 children, They had these children for over 2 years before the adoption became final.† My son-in-law gave the children the opportunity to choose new names from the Bible and all 3 of them did, and it has made a noticeable change in them.† Abram became Abraham and this made him aware of the breath of God being in his life.† God wants all of His children to be aware of His presence in their life and a significant understanding of how that changes them.† The promised land was also promised as a present to Abraham.† I believe God promising Abraham so much had to have a major effect in the action of Abrahamís daily life.† Today, as back then the knowledge of God and His blessings makes a difference in our lives and fellowship with God.† I think I see it in many peoples lives.† I ask many people if they know the Lord and the vast number of those say,ďyes.Ē
2.†† A New Name and . . Godís Promise Confirmed Sarai and Abraham.†† 17:15-19
A.† Godís Promises To Sarai A . . New Name and A Child.† 17:15-16
15 God said to Abraham, "As for your wife Sarai, do not call her Sarai, for Sarah will be her name.
16 I will bless her; indeed, I will give you a son by her. I will bless her, and she will produce nations; kings
of peoples will come from her."
B.† Godís Promise Confirmed To Abram.†† 17:17-19
17 Abraham fell to the ground, laughed, and thought in his heart, "Can a child be born to a
hundred‑year‑old man? Can Sarah, a ninety‑year‑old woman, give birth?"
18 So Abraham said to God, "If only Ishmael could live in Your presence!"
19 But God said, "No. Your wife Sarah will bear you a son, and you will name him Isaac. I will confirm My
covenant with him as an everlasting covenant for his offspring after him.
Will a man laugh if he really believes his wife is pregnant when they both are near 100 years of age?
I donít think so.† But the many experiences Abraham has enjoyed with God should have caused him to have more faith.† God answered Sarah and Abraham with Isaac, A special born son and everyone could know this child came from God.† After falling to the ground and laughing Abraham thought he would ask God to use Ishmael.† But God specifically planned to use Isaac as the unique son he had planned for His purposes with the people of Israel.† God planned to confirm His blessings through this unique child and made an everlasting covenant to come to past through this special son.
3.†† A New Name and . . Godís Promise about Ishmael and Isaac.†† 17:20-22
A.† Godís Promise about Isamael.†† 17:20
20 As for Ishmael, I have heard you. I will certainly bless him; I will make him fruitful and will multiply
him greatly. He will father 12 tribal leaders, and I will make him into a great nation.
B.† Godís Promise about Isamael.†† 17:21-22††††††††††††††
21 But I will confirm My covenant with Isaac, whom Sarah will bear to you at this time next year."
22 When He finished talking with him, God withdrew from Abraham.†† HCSB
Today most of the problems and threats Israel receives come from the nations claiming their beginning to be with Ishmael and Abraham.† Ishmael is the Father of the Arab nations.†† God promised that Ishmael would be the father of 12 tribal leaders and become a great nation.† The covenant of God however was confirmed with Isaac.† Isaac is mentioned first in the lineage of Jesus as coming from Abraham.† So the linage of Isaac produces Jesus.† Today America is a special nation and friends with Israel.† How much longer will that continue?† I hope it never ends and it becomes closer.† Hopefully some day we will have a similar name in heaven.† A New Name, Amen?† Amen!
