Commitment Kept††††† Joshua 10:6-14 HCSB†††††† Dec. 18, 2016

Introduction†††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††

When we read about the way God fought for his people in granting them unusual victory all we can do is to be amazed and very thankful. The Lord blessed His people as they were keeping their commitment in fighting for Him.

1.††† Commitment Kept is A . . Commitment Remembered.†† 10:6

A.†† The . . Call to Remember Our Commitment.††† v 6a

6 Then the men of Gibeon sent word to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal: "Don't abandon your servants. Come

quickly and save us! Help us, ††††††††††††††††††††††

B.††† The . . Concern of the Call.††† v 6b

ď. . . for all the Amorite kings living in the hill country have joined forces against us."

Joshua received a call from his soldiers in Gilbeon that, they need to be helped because all of the Amorite kings had united to bring a fight against them. They felt like they were abandoned and they were requesting help to be sent to them quickly. We can understand that feeling especially as we think about the lack of communication manners back then.Remember they did not have telephones, computers or any other of our modern devices. The only way they could get a message to Joshua was through a personal messenger. This was a major problem and the soldiers were sending an urgent communication.

2.††† Commitment Kept is A . . Commitment True To Godís Word.†† 10:7-8

A.†† The Commitment True to Godís Word is . .True to the Voice of God.†††† v 7-8a

7 So Joshua and his whole military force, including all the fighting men, came from Gilgal.

8 The Lord said to Joshua, "Do not be afraid of them,

B.††† The Commitment True to Godís Word is . .Trusting the Voice of God.†††† v 8b

ď. . . for I have handed them over to you. Not one of them will be able to stand against you."

The Lord told Joshua to go help his men in the battle against the Amorite kings.God told Joshua to take all his military men and help in the fight against the enemy. In addition the Lord told Joshua not be afraid of them for not any of them would be able to stand against his soldiers. The promise was given that He had handed them over to you in battle. How that must have given Joshua and his men the confidence they needed. They would sense this promise in there action during the battle. How do you think you would feel in a battle where you knew God had promised victory and that the enemy would not be able to stand against you in the battle. What a time of confidence and appreciation for all your God is doing.Victory was certain and safety would be part of your thought in every movement. It would bring praise to the Lord.

3.††† Commitment Kept is A . . Commitment of Rewarded Faithfulness.†† 10:9-14

A.†† The Commitment of Rewarded Faithfulness . .Blessed by the Promises of God.†††† v 9-11

9 So Joshua caught them by surprise, after marching all night from Gilgal.

10 The Lord threw them into confusion before Israel. He defeated them in a great slaughter at Gibeon, chased them through the ascent of Beth‑horon, and struck them down as far as Azekah and Makkedah.

11 As they fled before Israel, the Lord threw large hailstones on them from the sky along the descent

of Beth‑horon all the way to Azekah, and they died. More of them died from the hail than the Israelites

killed with the sword.

B.††† The Commitment of Rewarded Faithfulness . .Boasting the Promises of God.†††† v 12-14

12 On the day the Lord gave the Amorites over to the Israelites, Joshua spoke to the Lord in the

presence of Israel: "Sun, stand still over Gibeon, and moon, over the valley of Aijalon."

13 And the sun stood still and the moon stopped, until the nation took vengeance on its enemies.

Isn't this written in the Book of Jashar? So the sun stopped in the middle of the sky and delayed its

setting almost a full day.

14 There has been no day like it before or since, when the Lord listened to the voice of a man, because the

Lord fought for Israel.

Our text tells us there has been no day like this one before or since. So as some try to figure out how God did what he did just remember God had never done anything like this before or since.God fought for Israel and more of the enemy was killed by his hailstorm than Israel killed with the sword. That is the kind of battle I would like to be in if I ever have to fight in that sort of conflict. As we reason about such a battle we need to keep in perspective the faithfulness of Joshua and the people of God and His reward to His people.Faithfulness does bring rewards and our God will not allow His children to be short changed in the blessings they deserve and He can supply.†† As far as the miracle of the sun and moon standing still, I think God created them and He can do what He wants to and I donít have to figure our the details. The miracle is just part of the Commitment Kept; it is just a part of Godís abilities.Amen?†† Amen!
