With Anticipation      2 Peter 3:3-13, 17-18 NASB    Nov. 27, 2016

Introduction

Most Christians are willing to anticipate the return of the Lord.  I know of very few who deny the return of our Lord, However there are different interpretation about the details of how and when.   I think most conservatives believe the coming of the Lord to this earth will happen soon and believe that With Anticipation

1.   With Anticipation of the . . Sure Return.    2 Peter 3:3-7

A. Anticipate the Sure Return In Spite of . . Scoffers who Doubt His Return.   3:3-5

3 First, be aware of this: scoffers  will come in the last days to scoff, following their own lusts,

4saying, "Where is the promise of His coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they have been since the beginning of creation."

5 They willfully ignore this: long ago the heavens and the earth existed out of water and through water by the word of God.

B. Anticipate the Sure Return and the Judgement Held in . . Store for Ungodly Men.   3:6-7

6 Through these the world of that time perished when it was flooded by water.

7 But by the same word the present heavens and earth are held in store for fire, being kept until the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.

There are several people who make scoffing remarks about the possibility of Jesus coming again to this earth.  It happens today just as it did as Simon wrote this letter.  Simon uses the evidence of creation and the promised flood and how they   were spoken about and happened just as God said they would.   He shares that God will do what He predicts in spite of scoffers and those who deny the predicted truth as it relates to ungodly men.

2.   With Anticipation from A . . Patient Father.    2 Peter 3:8-9

A. Anticipation from A Patient Father holding  . . One Day Like a 1000 Days.    3:8

8 Dear friends, don't let this one thing escape you: with the Lord one day is like 1,000 years, and 1,000

years like one day.

B. Anticipation from A Patient Father not . . Wanting Any to Perish.    3:9

9 The Lord does not delay His promise, as some understand delay, but is patient with you, not wanting any

to perish, but all to come to repentance.

That all need to make the decision of repentance seems to be understood by few people today or at least they deny it or think they can delay their decision.  It seems fewer are making that decision today and we need a revival in this land.   The Lord desires all to make that decision.  It is great to see people make that decision and note the affect it has on the church and community.  The Love for the Lord permeates

through a group of new Christians as they praise the Lord and honor what He does in their life.  Since the Lord wants all to come to repentance why is it that evangelistic efforts or so slack in the majority of churches?  There needs to be more evangelistic efforts in our churches.

3.   With Anticipation of the . . Warning Issued.    2 Peter 3:10

A. Anticipation with A Warning about Judgement . . Day.    3:10a

10 But the Day of the Lord will come like a thief; on that day. . . “

B. Anticipation with A Warning about Judgement Days . . Disclosures.     3:10a

“. . . the heavens will pass away with a loud noise, the elements will burn and be dissolved, and the earth and the works on it will be disclosed.

That the Day of the Lord will come suddenly with surprise is announced by the Lord and we all should know that and begin to have some expectation about His return.  For all Christians it could and should be a great day of joy.   Many things will take place that could frighten us, but once we realize what this day is it should cause great joy for all who know the Lord.

4.   With Anticipation . . While Waiting.    2 Peter 3:11-13,17-18

A. Anticipation While Waiting for A . . New Heaven and Earth.    3:11-13

11 Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, it is clear what sort of people you should be in holy conduct and godliness

12 as you wait for and earnestly desire the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be

on fire and be dissolved, and the elements will melt with the heat.

13 But based on His promise, we wait for new heavens and a new earth, where righteousness will dwell.

B. Anticipation While Waiting to . . Glorify the Lord Jesus.    3:17-18

17 Therefore, dear friends, since you have been forewarned, be on your guard, so that you are not led away by the error of the immoral and fall from your own stability.

18 But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both

now and to the day of eternity. Amen.   HCSB

While waiting for the Lord’s return we can anticipate the new heavens and earth because He has told us this is where righteousness will dwell.  It will be great when all of us will no longer have any actions but those that are completely righteous.  There will be no sinful activity only those of sinless people.  What a great place heaven will be as only those who belong to the Lord will be there.  Certainly this is a place of eternal praise unto our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  It is a place we look forward too With Anticipation.  Amen?  Amen!
