The Faith Test     Gen. 22:1-14 HCSB     Nov. 22, 2015

Introduction

For a parent I do not know of anything that causes a faith test greater than the death of ones child.  No

parent really wants to have that test.  In Abraham’s case the death of his son born in his old age is going to be sacrificed.  Abraham must have done much talking to God about this but it is not recorded for us to see.  Could

it be the pagans of his day were asked by their so called gods to sacrifice their children and they made their sacrifices as a statement of superiority to Abraham and God gave this test to him to prove the superiority of His relationship with God?  Abraham made a sacrifice of his son but his God stopped him and showed him a ram caught in the thicket especially for the sacrifice.  God stopped Abraham from sacrificing Isaac.  The Faith Test was passed by Abraham and now he knows how he will forever do in that kind of a test.

1.   The Faith Test . . The Presentation.   22:1-2

A.  Presented as God Called Abraham to . . Begin the Faith Test.   22:1

1 After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" "Here I am," he answered.

B.  Presented as God Called Abraham to Make A . . Burnt Offering of His Son.   22:2

2 "Take your son," He said, "your only son Isaac, whom you love, go to the land of Moriah, and offer him

there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains I will tell you about."

I believe this test is for Abraham to know how he will do in such a test.  God says this about the facts of how Abraham will perform, but Abraham really needs the experience.  There are times when all of us are blessed through certain tests the Lord allows us to go through.  Our faith grows stronger through these tests and we see how God works.

2.   The Faith Test . . The Preparation.   22:3-8

A.  The Faith Test Prepared for as they Journeyed to the . . Place.   22:3-4

3 So early in the morning Abraham got up, saddled his donkey, and took with him two of his young men and his son Isaac. He split wood for a burnt offering and set out to go to the place God had told him about. 4 On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance.

B.  The Faith Test Prepared for as they Journeyed to . . Plan for the Sacrifice.   22:5-6

5 Then Abraham said to his young men, "Stay here with the donkey. The boy and I will go over there to worship; then we'll come back to you."

6 Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and laid it on his son Isaac. In his hand he took the fire and

the sacrificial knife, and the two of them walked on together.

C.  The Faith Test Prepared for with the . . Persuasion God will Provide.  22:7-8

7 Then Isaac spoke to his father Abraham and said, "My father."

And he replied, "Here I am, my son."

Isaac said, "The fire and the wood are here, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?"

8 Abraham answered, "God Himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son." Then the two of

them walked on together.

Taking the journey to the place where God wants the test to take place gives some time to think about the test and all the possibilities that might be included.  Isaac is a special son and surely God doesn’t want him to be killed by a sacrifice.  Abraham could say surely not by my knife and my action.  This father surely would have had many such conversations on the trip to the place of sacrifice.  I think Abraham expected God to do something different.  How is God working in this situation had to enter Abraham’s mind.

3.   The Faith Test . . Passed.   22:9-12

A.  The Faith Test Passed as Abraham . . Performed Obediently.   22:3-4

9 When they arrived at the place that God had told him about, Abraham built the altar there and arranged the wood. He bound his son Isaac and placed him on the altar, on top of the wood.

10 Then Abraham reached out and took the knife to slaughter his son.

B.  The Faith Test Passed as God . . Provided the Lamb.    22:3-4

11 But the Angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, "Abraham, Abraham!"

He replied, "Here I am."

12 Then He said, "Do not lay a hand on the boy or do anything to him. For now I know that you fear God,

since you have not withheld your only son from Me."

C.  The Faith Test Passed as God’s . . Provision was Accepted.    22:13-14

13 Abraham looked up and saw a ram caught by its horns in the thicket. So Abraham went and took the ram and offered it as a burnt offering in place of his son.

14 And Abraham named that place The Lord Will Provide, so today it is said: "It will be provided on the

Lord's mountain."

Abraham came with Isaac to the place of the sacrifice and placed Isaac on the altar and what a difficult experience that must have been.  Abraham was stopped from striking Isaac with his knife as Abraham proved how much faith he had in God.  The New Testament says about Abraham, “ He considered God to be able even to raise someone from the dead,” (Heb. 11:19 HCSB)   Today the Lamb that is needed for the sacrifice is permanently suppled in Jesus as He is the, “Lamb of God,” who takes away our sin.  When we place faith in Him we pass The Faith Test Amen? Amen!
