It’s All About Victory     Rom. 7:7-25 (HCSB)       Oct. 9, 2011

Introduction

Everyone likes victory. I am a baseball fan and I want my team to win. In Christ I know we have an ultimate victory but I would like victory in every aspect of life. How about you?

1.   Through Victory We Know . . What Sin Is. 7:7-12

       A.   We Know What Sin Is Through the . . Law. 7:7-9

7 What should we say then? Is the law sin? Absolutely not! On the contrary, I would not have known sin

if it were not for the law. For example, I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said,

Do not covet. 8 And sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, produced in me coveting of

every kind. For apart from the law sin is dead. 9 Once I was alive apart from the law, but when the

commandment came, sin sprang to life

       B.   We Know What Sin Is Through Our . . Life. 7:10-12

10 and I died. The commandment that was meant for life resulted in death for me. 11 For sin, seizing an

opportunity through the commandment, deceived me, and through it killed me. 12 So then, the law is holy,

and the commandment is holy and just and good.

Paul gives a very good testimony and word picture describing the effect of the law causing him to know

about sin. Did you ever think something was not sinful and then hear it was sinful? As a young man I

thought a particular action was not sinful. Then I was shocked to hear the preacher start talking about this

action being sin. I wanted to get up and walk out as I thought if I didn’t know it was sin it would not be sin

for me. Wrong! The law would have caught up with me. A few years later I realized I never had been

saved. Since my salvation experience the Holy Spirit in my life has told me about sin

2.   Through Victory We Know . . Where Sin Is. 7:13-20

       A.   We Know Where Sin Is In Our . . Make-up. 7:13-15

13 Therefore, did what is good cause my death? Absolutely not! On the contrary, sin, in order to be

recognized as sin, was producing death in me through what is good, so that through the commandment, sin

might become sinful beyond measure. 14 For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am made out of flesh,

sold into sin’s power. 15 For I do not understand what I am doing, because I do not practice what I want to

do, but I do what I hate.

       B.   We Know Where Sin Is In Our . . Mentality. 7:13-15

16 And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree with the law that it is good. 17 So now I am no longer the

one doing it, but it is sin living in me. 18 For I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my flesh. For

the desire to do what is good is with me, but there is no ability to do it. 19 For I do not do the good that I

want to do, but I practice the evil that I do not want to do. 20 Now if I do what I do not want, I am no

longer the one doing it, but it is the sin that lives in me.

Sin rest in our make-up. We are sinners by birth and choice. Paul says in verse 15, “I do not practice what I want to do, but I do what I hate.” I think all of us will have to admit being guilty in a similar manner. In chapter three verse 23 Paul says, “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” How do we come short? It is in our make-up. Then it is also in our mentality. The flesh thinks sinful thoughts, it lives in the flesh. We also know the Holy Spirit lives in our spirit so who wins this battle? In a mundane phrase, “the one we say, “sic em” to the most. We can seek to walk in the fulness of God’s Spirit or just walk as mere men. If we think and walk as men we fail; if we walk in the Spirit we have victory mentally and physically as Christians

3.   Through Victory We Know . . When Sin Is. 7:21-25

       A.   We Know When Sin Causes . . War to Rage in our beings. 7:21-23

21 So I discover this principle: When I want to do what is good, evil is with me. 22 For in my inner self I joyfully agree with God’s law. 23 But I see a different law in the parts of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and taking me prisoner to the law of sin in the parts of my body.

       B.   We Know When Sin Causes the . . Wretched Man to Show Forth. 7:24-25

24 What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this dying body? 25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, with my mind I myself am a slave to the law of God, but with my flesh, to the law of sin.

Does war rage in your being sometimes because of sin. Maybe there is something you think you would like to do but you know it is not right. Satan can make sin attractive. If you have been on a diet to loose weight you know when your traveling down the road every stop light also has a big signboard across the street advertising some delicious food. The war starts and you may stop soon at the fast food place and get some food and eat more than you want to. Then as you get back in the car and drive down the road you ask yourself, “why did I do that, it didn’t even taste that good.” Because in the flesh we are a wretched man and he won the war. So It’s All About Victory only as we yield to the Holy Spirit. Amen? Amen!
