Living In Relationship      1 Peter 3:1-12 HCSB      Oct. 2, 2016

Introduction

The good life is built upon relationships.  The better your relationships are the better your life will be.

Our relationships can improve as we try to demonstrate our interests and concerns about life and that we know how to be Living In Relationships.

1.   Living In Relationships As . . A Wife.  3:1-6

A.  Wives to Have a . . Submissive Style.   3:1-3

1 Wives, in the same way, submit yourselves to your own husbands so that, even if some disobey the Christian message, they may be won over without a message by the way their wives live,

2 when they observe your pure, reverent lives.

3 Your beauty should not consist of outward things like elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold

ornaments or fine clothes;

B.  Wives to Have a . . Sensible Style.   3:4-6

4 instead, it should consist of the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very valuable in God's eyes.

5 For in the past, the holy women who hoped in God also beautified themselves in this way, submitting to

their own husbands,

6 just as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord. You have become her children when you do good and

aren't frightened by anything alarming.

These verses tell the wife to be submissive to her husband.  This is to be practiced even if the husband is disobedient to the ways of God.  As hard as that might seem many of us have seen examples of that life style and heard testimonies of how men have been won to the Christian Faith by such actions of a Christian woman.

The example to wives is that of Sarah with her husband Abraham.  Now I believe Abraham lovede his wife and showed her that he did on many occasions.  I personally believe when the man loves like God tells him to do the wife in that relationship has little problem being submissive.  Most women enjoy the relationship with a man who demonstrates his love to his wife and family and she doesn’t find it hard to be submissive

2.   Living In Relationships As A Husband.  3:7

A.  Husbands to Have a . . Understanding Style.   3:7a

7 Husbands, in the same way, live with your wives with understanding of their weaker nature . . .”

B.  Husbands to Have a . . Unhindering Style.   3:7b

“. . . yet showing them honor as co‑heirs of the grace of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered.”

Men’s attitude toward their wife can affect their prayer life.  We men need to check our prayer life to make sure it is not hindered because of our lack of showing love and honor to our wife.   Most Christian men must

admit their wife spends more time in prayer than he does.   We also need to ask why our wives seem to be

more interested in prayer than we are?  All over our nation the evidence will come that women are the ones spending the most time is prayer.  We husbands need to improve that fact by spending more time in prayer.

 3.  Living In Relationships As . . All Believers.  3:8-12

A.   All Believers Need To Be . . Sympathetic.    3:8-9

8 Now finally, all of you should be like‑minded and sympathetic, should love believers, and be compassionate and humble,

9 not paying back evil for evil or insult for insult but, on the contrary, giving a blessing, since you were called for this, so that you can inherit a blessing.

B.    All Believers Need To Be . . Sympathetic.    3:10-12

10 For the one who wants to love life and to see good days must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit,

11 and he must turn away from evil and do good. He must seek peace and pursue it,

12 because the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and His ears are open to their request. But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.

The scripture tell all believers to be compassionate and humble.  With this attitude we are not to pay back evil for evil.  We are to have a sympathetic attitude and try to help all people.  We can come closer to doing this

when we really have a good Christian life style by demonstrating it very well.  We are to love fellow believers.

Remember Jesus said, people will know we are believers by the way we love one another.  Our doctrine is important but we need to also be very concerned about our love.
