Jesus Defeats Satan Rev. 12:1-17 HCSB Aug. 23, 2015
1. The First Segment and the . . Characters As Jesus Defeats Satan. 12:1-4
A. The First Segment with Characters . . Identified As Israel. 12:1-2
1 A great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and a
crown of 12 stars on her head.
2 She was pregnant and cried out in labor and agony to give birth.
B. The First Segment with Characters . . Identified As Satan. 12:3-4
3 Then another sign appeared in heaven: There was a great fiery red dragon having seven heads and 10
horns, and on his heads were seven diadems.
4 His tail swept away a third of the stars in heaven and hurled them to the earth. And the dragon stood in
front of the woman who was about to give birth, so that when she did give birth he might devour her child.
Many believers think this woman represents a symbol of Israel. Clothed with the sun may refer to the
glory, dignity, and exalted status of Israel, the people of promise. The moon possibly describes God's
covenant relationship with Israel, since new moons were associated with worship (1Ch 23:31; 2Ch 2:4;
8:13; Ezr 3:5; Ps 81:3). The 12 stars most likely represent the 12 tribes of Israel. Israel’s pain through the
years is apparent to all of us as she has suffered through the years. The dragon represents Satan and appears
as a dragon 13 times in this book. During the time of Christ birth Satan sought to destroy him and even led
the King to kill several boys under 2 years of birth in an attempt to kill the Christ child. Satan swept a third
of the stars of heaven relates to Satan's original rebellion (cf. Isa 14:12ff.; Eze 28:11ff.) And resulted in
one‑third of the angelic host joining his insurrection.
2. The Second Segment and . . Characters As Jesus Defeats Satan. 12:5-9
A. The Second Segment with Characters . . Identified As Israel. 12:5-6
5 But she gave birth to a Son—a male who is going to shepherd all nations with an iron scepter—and her
child was caught up to God and to His throne.
6 The woman fled into the wilderness, where she had a place prepared by God, to be fed there for 1,260
B. The Second Segment with Characters . . Identified As Michael and Satan. 12:7-9
7 Then war broke out in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon. The dragon and his angels also fought,
8 but he could not prevail, and there was no place for them in heaven any longer.
9 So the great dragon was thrown out—the ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan, the one who
deceives the whole world. He was thrown to earth, and his angels with him.
Mary gave birth to Jesus and He will be like a shepherd over His sheep during the Millennial Reign and
will eventually go back to heaven sitting at the right hand of God and His throne. During the Millennial
Period Christ will rule with an iron scepter. Israel will be taken to a place prepared for her by God. Before
all this war broke out in heaven and Satan was thrown out with one third of his angels. Satan is called the
great deceiver and it is easy to see why he gets such a title.
3. The Third Segment and . . Characters As Jesus Defeats Satan. 12:10-12
A. The Third Segment with Characters As . . Messiah and Satan. 12:10
10 Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say: The salvation and power and the kingdom of our God and the
authority of His Messiah have now come, because the accuser of our brothers has been thrown out: the one
who accuses them before our God day and night.
B. The Third Segment with Characters As . . Saved Saints and the Devil. 12:11-12
11 They conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they did not love
their lives in the face of death.
12 Therefore rejoice, O heavens, and you who dwell in them! Woe to the earth and the sea for the Devil
has come down to you with great fury, because he knows he has a short time.
The power of the Kingdom of God comes to the saints because Satan is kick out of heaven and the authority of the Messiah has gained freedom. The saints conquer by the blood of the lamb, the word of their testimony and the lack of fear at the face of death. This time is a time of woe on the earth and sea because of the fury of
of the Devil because he knows his time is short.
4. The Characters in the . . Fourth Segment of Action As Jesus Defeats Satan. 12:10-12
A. The Fourth Segment with Characters As the . . Dagon and Israel with Wings. 12:13-14
13 When the dragon saw that he had been thrown to earth, he persecuted the woman who gave birth to the male.
14 The woman was given two wings of a great eagle, so that she could fly from the serpent's presence to
her place in the wilderness, where she was fed for a time, times, and half a time.
B. The Fourth Segment with Characters As the . . Serpent-Dragon and Israel. 12:15-17
15 From his mouth the serpent spewed water like a river after the woman, to sweep her away in a torrent.
16 But the earth helped the woman: the earth opened its mouth and swallowed up the river that the dragon
had spewed from his mouth.
17 So the dragon was furious with the woman and left to wage war against the rest of her offspring—those
who keep the commandments of God and have the testimony about Jesus.
The serpent spews out water after Israel. I wonder how much it was like the storm and rain we had last night. I am sure it was much worse. The serpent wants to destroy Israel and all the good God has done through her and will continue to do but he is finding out again he is not powerful enough to combat the Lord. The earth opens up to swallow much of the water the serpent spews from his mouth. This causes the serpent to by furious in his anger. Satan’s furor continues against Israel and those who keep His commandments and have a testimony about Jesus. We can see the hatred Satan has for Israel even today but it will become even worse. It is a joy to know Jesus Defeats Satan. Amen? Amen!
