The Worthy Lamb†††† Rev. 5:1-14 HCSB†††† Aug. 09, 2015
The Lamb is worthy from several perspectives.† He is Godís choice to be the Lamb.† He had to live a sinless life even though He faced all the temptations which we face.† He did not yield to any of these temptations.† Jesus fought a battle in the garden before the actual cross experience.† He proved Himself to be The Worthy Lamb.
1.††† The Worthy Lamb . . The Search.††† 5:1-4
A.†† The . . Call for One who Is Worthy.†† 5:1-2
1 Then I saw in the right hand of the One seated on the throne a scroll with writing on the inside and on the
back, sealed with seven seals.
2 I also saw a mighty angel proclaiming in a loud voice, "Who is worthy to open the scroll and break
B.††† The . . Crying As no one Is Found.†† 5:3-4
3 But no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth was able to open the scroll or even to look in it.
4 And I cried and cried because no one was found worthy to open the scroll or even to look in it.
Some students of this book believe this scroll has itís origin in Ezekiel or Daniel.† Much of the book of
Revelation has a reference to teachings in the Old Testament.† Can you imagine someone realizing this
scroll was very important and looking forward to it being opened and then no one can be found
who can open it?† No one will know what the scroll talks about or how it relates to the future.† The call is
given for someone to come and open it, but no one is found. You can hear the crying and you want to find
someone who can open the scroll.†† If someone can open the scroll they will be a special person. Interesting;
the term lamb is used 32 times in the New Testament and 28 times in the book of Revelation.
2.††† The Worthy Lamb . . The Slaughtered Lamb.††††† 5:5-7
A.†† The Slaughtered Lamb One Able to . . Open the Scroll.†† 5:5-6a
5 Then one of the elders said to me, "Stop crying. Look! The Lion from the tribe of Judah, the Root of
David, has been victorious so that He may open the scroll and its seven seals."
6 Then I saw one like a slaughtered lamb standing between the throne and the four living creatures and
among the elders.
B..†† The Slaughtered Lamb One Able to . . Oversee the Handling of the Scroll.†† 5:6b-7
6b He had seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent into all the earth.
7 He came and took the scroll out of the right hand of the One seated on the throne.
In heaven at this time there is the appearance of a slaughtered Lamb.† He is Jesus the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the root of David.† He is also seen as He looks like a slaughter lamb.† This is a bold and powerful picture of Christ.† A sad picture of Christ but also one of praise for the sacrifice He made for our sin.† We have a reservation in heaven only because of Christ sacrifice.† Praise His holy name.† He can open the seals and oversee the planned expression Godís plans to come on earth from every seal.† This will include a terrible time of judgement and victory of Christ over Satan and his servants.
3.††† The Worthy Lamb A Time for . . The Honoring this Lamb.††† 5:8-14
A.†† The Time of Honoring This Lamb and His . . Redemption.†† 5:8-9
8 When He took the scroll, the four living creatures and the 24 elders fell down before the Lamb. Each one
had a harp and gold bowls filled with incense, which are the prayers of the saints.
9 And they sang a new song:† You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals; because You were
slaughtered ,and You redeemed people for God by Your blood from every tribe and language and people
B.††† The Time of Honoring This Lamb and His . . Receiving of Power and Riches.†† 5:10-12
10 You made them a kingdom and priests to our God, and they will reign on the earth.
11 Then I looked, and heard the voice of many angels around the throne, and also of the living creatures,
and of the elders. Their number was countless thousands, plus thousands of thousands.
12 They said with a loud voice: The Lamb who was slaughtered is worthy to receive power and riches and
wisdom and strengthen honor and glory and blessing!
C.†† The Time of Honoring This Lamb and His . . Rousing Expressions of Honor.††† 5:13-14
13 I heard every creature in heaven, on earth, under the earth, on the sea, and everything in them say:
Blessing and honor and glory and dominion to the One seated on the throne, and to the Lamb,
forever and ever!
14 The four living creatures said, "Amen," and the elders fell down and worshiped.
Many believe these verses refer to a rousing time of expressing our praise to the Lord.† The final verse
of this chapter simply says the elders fell down and worshiped Him.† What a great time to be involved, as we witness the praise of the Lord and join in it.†† This eternal celebration is a time of honoring the Lamb, This is done by every tribe, nation and people.†† What a time of praise.† The text says there will be countless of thousand in this number.† In loud voices they proclaim how worthy Jesus is for this praise because of what He did and will do.† This praise of course includes the One seated on the throne who is God the Father as He enables Jesus to be The Worthy Lamb.† Amen?† Amen!
