Check Your Directions      Jer. 31:27-34      July 31, 2011

Introduction

Most men don’t like to stop and asked for directions. Usually that comes from the lack of good information they have received in the past. That is not true with the directions given by the Lord. Men the Lord’s advice is Check Your Directions especially in spiritual matters.

1.   Check Your Directions and the . . Promise of New Life. 31:27-28

       A.   The Promise of New Life from the . . Will and Way of the Lord. 31:27

27 "Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD, that I will sow the house of Israel and the house of Judah with the seed of man and the seed of beast.

       B.   The Promise of New Life from the . . Watch of the Lord. 31:28

28 And it shall come to pass, that as I have watched over them to pluck up, to break down, to throw down,

to destroy, and to afflict, so I will watch over them to build and to plant, says the LORD.

The Lord’s directions should be followed because He knows the way and He has a will related to the choices people make. Have you ever set out to go somewhere and one route was very straight and easy to follow. There were several other ways to get to the destination and they might, even be shorter but they would wind around with more possibility of getting lost. God knows the way and it may not be the shortest but it is the best. God promises to watch over the people to build and plant according to their needs.

2.   Check Your Directions and the . . Personal Responsibility for Sin. 31:29-30

       A.   The Personal Responsibility of Sin and the . . Acknowledgment by All. 31:29

29 In those days they shall say no more: 'The fathers have eaten sour grapes, And the children's teeth are set on edge.'

       B.   The Personal Responsibility of Sin and the . . Acceptance of Guilt. 31:30

30 But every one shall die for his own iniquity; every man who eats the sour grapes, his teeth shall be set on

       edge.

It has been a fault ever since Adam and Eve to blame someone else for one’s sin. All of us have done that with sisters, brothers, and friends. God says there is coming a day when that will not longer work, if it ever did!

You and I may have been influenced by someone else to sin but in reality the fault comes back to our choices.

The day an illustration of a person’s teeth being on edge because a father ate sour grapes will not hold water.

Everyone must admit they ate the sour grapes all on their own. Fathers and mothers have influence and we need to be careful how we affect our children. But we are all responsible for our sin.

3.   Check Your Directions and the . . Preparation of the Heart. 31:31-33

       A.   The Preparation of the Heart and the . . Promised New Covenant. 31:31-32

31 "Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah-- 32 not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, though I was a husband to them, says the LORD.

       B.   The Preparation of the Heart and the . . Placement of the New Heart. 31:33

33 But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.

When God gives new directions He also gives the promise of a new covenant. The word “new” can bring fear and excitement. We built a new home on three occasions and went regularly to look at the progress. When someone else says I am going to provide something new for you it may bring a feeling of nervousness but there should be peace and contentment knowing God’s “new” is always for our good. The placement of this new covenant is in the Christian’s mind and heart.. People may look at Christianity and say, “I don’t think I can live the Christian life.” By themselves they can’t, but by the gift being placed in their heart they will find it easier.

Of course the Holy Spirit gives us strength and direction.

4.   Check Your Directions and the . . Personal Relationship with the Lord. 31:34

       A.   The Personal Relationship and the . . Comprehensive Giving of the Lord. 31:34a

34 No more shall every man teach his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, 'Know the LORD,' for

they all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them,

       B.   The Personal Relationship and the . . Cleansing from the Lord. 31:34b

“. . . says the LORD. For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more."

This relationship is given comprehensively from the Lord. Likewise the cleansing from the Lord is given comprehensively. When do we receive this kind of relationship and cleansing? It comes with the relationship that is given with the new heart; When these verses become a reality . That may not happen until the millennial reign of Christ. The Lord certainly says to all of us, Check Your Directions. Amen? Amen!
