Why Do I Feel Empty?     Eccl. 3:1, 10-14; 4:9-12; 5:1-7     July 28. 2013

Introduction

Feeling empty is not a design for us as we serve the Lord.

1.   Why Do I Feel Empty? My Focus Is Not . . Centered On God. Eccl. 3:1, 10-14

       A.   My Focus Is Not Centered On God’s . . Plans. 3:1, 10-12

3:1 The Mystery of Time There is an occasion for everything, and a time for every activity under heaven:

10 I have seen the task that God has given people to keep them occupied.

11 He has made everything appropriate in its time. He has also put eternity in their hearts, but man cannot

discover the work God has done from beginning to end.

12 I know that there is nothing better for them than to rejoice and enjoy the good life.

       B.   My Focus Is Not Centered On God’s . . Purposes. 3:1, 13-14

13 It is also the gift of God whenever anyone eats, drinks, and enjoys all his efforts.

14 I know that all God does will last forever; there is no adding to it or taking from it. God works so that

people will be in awe of Him.  HCSB

If a person knows God’s plans and focuses on them they can lean on them to sense a fulfilment in life. But if things do not make any sense and seem to be without plan or purpose life will seem fruitless. One certainly might ask where is God in all of this? If we get some idea of God’s direction then we may sense the good life.

Do we have a sense of awe about God and the life He directs. If we can look back over our life and see where God has directed and watched over us we will lose any empty feeling we might have without His presence and direction.

2.   Why Do I Feel Empty? My Focus Is Not . . Championing my Companions. Eccl. 4:9-12

       A.   My Focus Is Not Championing My Companions . . Efforts. 4:9-10

9 Two are better than one because they have a good reward for their efforts.

10 For if either falls, his companion can lift him up; but pity the one who falls without another

       to lift him up.

       B.   My Focus Is Not Championing My Companions . . Energies. 4:11-12

11 Also, if two lie down together, they can keep warm; but how can one person alone keep warm?

12 And if somebody overpowers one person, two can resist him. A cord of three strands is not easily

       broken. HCSB

Do you have friends you know will champion your needs and support you in times of great concerns? Sometimes the efforts put forth by friends and the strength of the Lord is all that keeps us moving forward. It is very sad when people do not have friends or they lose the friends they have had for a long time. Did you ever have a bully threaten you and then a friend came over to defend you. I had such an experience as a child. I have friends who would and have stood up for me in my adult life. Only a few years ago one minister who did not know what he was talking about really wanted to take me to task. I decided not to say anything or try to defend myself. Some friends took up for me and I was blessed by their words. It is a great help and encouraging to understand how God may be using your life. All of us can be blessed by friends and companions.

3.   Why Do I Feel Empty? My Focus Is Not . . Cherishing the Words of God. Eccl. 5:1-7

       A.   My Focus Is Not Cherishing the Words of God . . Speaking to Me. 5:1-4

1 Guard your step when you go to the house of God. Better to draw near in obedience than to offer the sacrifice as fools do, for they are ignorant and do wrong.

2 Do not be hasty to speak, and do not be impulsive to make a speech before God. God is in heaven and you

are on earth, so let your words be few.

3 For dreams result from much work and a fool's voice from many words.

4 When you make a vow to God, don't delay fulfilling it, because He does not delight in fools. Fulfill what

       you vow.

       B.   My Focus Is Not Cherishing the Words I . . Spoke to Him. 5:5-7

5 Better that you do not vow than that you vow and not fulfill it.

6 Do not let your mouth bring guilt on you, and do not say in the presence of the messenger that it was a

mistake. Why should God be angry with your words and destroy the work of your hands?

7 For many dreams bring futility, also many words. So, fear God. HCSB

The people were told to watch their feet as they entered the house of God. Today we need to enter with thanksgiving and with a desire to hear from the Word of God. It is my desire to hear a sermon saturated with the Word of God so the Holy Spirt can bless me and others. But if I walk away from church and do not hear from the word of God I feel empty. I need the text expounded for me to hear from God. If the Word has been expounded I usually want to talk to God and perhaps make promises to obey His word and look for a way to keep His commands. Personally when that happens I will not ask Why Do I Feel Empty? Amen? Amen!
