What Spiritual Gifts Can I Use?     1Cor. 12:4-13, 18-19, 27-31; !4:1, 39-40       July 11, 2010

Introduction

An Emphasis on spiritual gifts in the Christian community has matured. Some who used to almost try to

force certain gifts on all Christians; today realize the gifts are given as the Lord wills. Many Christian have asked What Spiritual Gifts Can I Use?

1.   I Can Use The Gifts God Has . . Provided For Me. 1 Cor 12:4-10

       A.   God Has Provided A . . Motivational Gift. 12:4

4 Now there are different gifts, but the same Spirit.

       B.   God Has Provided A . . Ministry Gift. 12:5

5 There are different ministries, but the same Lord.

       C.   God Has Provided A . . Manifestation Gift. 12:6-7

6 And there are different activities, but the same God is active in everyone and everything.

7 A manifestation of the Spirit is given to each person to produce what is beneficial:

       D.   God Has Provided . . Message Gifts. 12:8-9

8 to one is given a message of wisdom through the Spirit, to another, a message of knowledge by the same

Spirit, 9 to another, faith by the same Spirit, to another, gifts of healing by the one Spirit,

       E.   God Has Provided . . Message Gifts. 12:10

10 to another, the performing of miracles, to another, prophecy, to another, distinguishing between spirits,

to another, different kinds of languages, to another, interpretation of languages.

I believe a good presentation of the gifts helps a Christian to discover their Motivational and Ministry Gifts.

God has a motivational gift for every Christian. This gift makes itself known in every thing you do. My gift is exhortation and all of my service for the Lord moves through that gift. As a pastor it has been very helpful for me to know the different gifts God has given certain people. I need to know who has the gift of mercy at the time of sickness or death. When we have an organization need it is good for me to know who has the gift of organization. God provides these gifts as He wills. Note the gift of healing is plural, and no one gets a permanent gift of healing.

2.   I Can Use The Gift God . . Particularized For Me. 1 Cor 12:11-13; 12:18-20

       A.   God Has Particularized A Gift . . Empowered By His Spirit. 12:11-13

11 But one and the same Spirit is active in all these, distributing to each one as He wills.

12 For as the body is one and has many parts, and all the parts of that body, though many, are one body—so

also is Christ. 13 For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, whether

slaves or free—and we were all made to drink of one Spirit. HCSB

       B.   God Has Particularized A Gift . . Entered In The Church By His Spirit. 12:18-19

18 But now God has placed the parts, each one of them, in the body just as He wanted. 19 And if they were all the same part, where would the body be? HCSB

In my lifetime I have seen people try to force certain gifts on all Christians. Note the Bible says He distributes these gifts as He wills. I don’t work them up He sends them down. God has a particular gift for me. These gifts are not only given by the spirit as He wills but He empowers the proper use of them.

3.   I Can Use The Gift God Gave Me And . . Placed In The Church. 1 Cor 12:27-30

       A.   God Has Placed The Gifts . . According To His Will. 12:27-28

27 Now you are the body of Christ, and individual members of it. 28 And God has placed these in the church: first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, next, miracles, then gifts of healing, helping, managing, various kinds of languages.

       B.   God Has Placed The Gifts With . . Availability As Needed. 12:29-30

29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all do miracles? 30 Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in languages? Do all interpret? HCSB

These gifts are given for the needs of the church. Note the listing of the gifts. I believe this is a list in order of importance and apostles are listed first. In the New Testament apostles had a ministry of being missionaries

or those who established churches, Prophets are secnd and there primary ministry is to declare truth and keep the truth on the fore front. Also note where languages are mentioned. Some want to make tongues the number one gift but that is not biblical.

4.   I Can Use The Gift God Gave Me . . Pursuing The Gift Of Love. 1 Cor 12:31; 14:1, 39-40

       A.   Pursing The Gift Of Love And . . Desiring The Greater Gifts. 12:31, 14:1

31 But desire the greater gifts. And I will show you an even better way.

1 Pursue love and desire spiritual gifts, and above all that you may prophesy.

       B.   Pursing The Gift Of Love With . . Decency and Order. 14:39-40

39 Therefore, my brothers, be eager to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in other languages. 40 But everything must be done decently and in order. HCSB

Above all gifts love must be elevated. It does not matter what gift you have if you do not keep it under the banner of love. We are told to desire to have the greater gifts. Sometimes the gifts that make the biggest spectacle get the most attention, but that is not God’s order. Satan wants to counterfeit the spiritual gifts, and then they cause more attention to the gift and less to the Lord. If there is not an order to the expressing of the gift the activity is not of the Lord.
