Dangers To Avoid     1 John 2:15-27 HCSB     June 21,2015

Introduction

In many places we can see an obvious decrease in attendance and in many places it is because we see older believers dying.  We do not reach younger people as easily as we did.  Part of the reason is our lack of personal evangelism.  Bible study is not as popular as it should be and doctrine is not studied as it once was.  We have several Dangers To Avoid.

1.   Dangers to Avoid . . A Love for the World.   2:15-17

A.   The Love for the World . . Rather Than the Things of God.   2:15-16

15 Do not love the world or the things that belong to the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in him. Because everything that belongs to the world—

16 the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride in one's lifestyle—is not from the Father, but is

from the world.

B.    The Love for the World . . Replacing the Love for God.    2:17

17And the world with its lust is passing away, but the one who does God's will remains forever.

All of us have a battle with the things of the world.  Those who do best in winning this battle are those who

build a stronger love for God.  They abide in the Lord through their devotional time with the Word of God their

personal prayer time with God and their willingness to witness and share their faith.  All of us have heard about some prominent Christian falling in pronounced sin due to lust and neglect of the procedures mentioned in the disciplines mentioned previously.  I heard a prominent minister say he had never known another to fall into prominent sin who regularly had a significant devotional life.  The text tells the importance of doing God’s will

and even when we are not positive about all parts of God’s will for us we all know we are to love God and maintain our devotional life.

2.   Dangers to Avoid . . The Enemies of the Gospel.   2:18-23

A.   The Enemies of the Gospel the . . Deceivers Like Anti-Christ and Persons Like Him.   2:18-19

18 Children, it is the last hour. And as you have heard, "Antichrist is coming," even now many antichrists

have come. We know from this that it is the last hour.

19 They went out from us, but they did not belong to us; for if they had belonged to us, they would have

remained with us. However, they went out so that it might be made clear that none of them belongs to us.

B.    The Enemies of the Gospel the . . Deniers who Believe Like Antichrist.   2:20-23

20 But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you all have knowledge.

21 I have not written to you because you don't know the truth, but because you do know it, and because no

lie comes from the truth.

22 Who is the liar, if not the one who denies that Jesus is the Messiah? He is the antichrist, the one who

denies the Father and the Son.

23 No one who denies the Son can have the Father; he who confesses the Son has the Father as well.

In our world there will be some who are deceivers.  We may have thought they were with us but they made their belief known and proved they really denied the faith making know they really did not believe Christ was the Lord of their life.  Those who go away from the faith demonstrate their belief was false and show it by their going away from the church.  They behave like the antichrist because as the text says they are antichrist.  If a person denies Jesus is the Messiah he denies the Father also because the Father and Messiah are God.  In my opinion the problems we are having in America today are caused by people not believing, and behaving like Christians should.  An Illustration of this can be many cities having less than 50% of the fathers living in the home so the children are illegitiment and do not have a father’s discipline.  God’s ways are not followed.

3.   Dangers to Avoid all Kinds of  . . Unfaithfulness to the Gospel.   2:24-27

A.   Unfaithfulness to the Gospel by . . Deserters.   2:24-25

24 What you have heard from the beginning must remain in you. If what you have heard from the beginning remains in you, then you will remain in the Son and in the Father.

25 And this is the promise that He Himself made to us: eternal life.

B.    Unfaithfulness to the Gospel by . . Deceivers.   2:26-27

26 I have written these things to you about those who are trying to deceive you.

27 The anointing you received from Him remains in you, and you don't need anyone to teach you.

Instead, His anointing teaches you about all things, and is true and is not a lie; just as it has taught you,

remain in Him.

I grew up in a church with many older believers who were strong in their faith and pleased to witness to it.  To have some desert the faith was not seen or heard of by me as a young believer.  A few years later while out pastoring a church I learned more about this.  Some today join church because it might be good for their business.  When business grows there interest wanes and may disappear because it was not rooted in Christ.  Faith could not remain because it was non existent.  Some people may think it is better to leave the faith and try to disciples others away from Christ because the do not have a commitment nor real faith in Christ.  Since they were never born again they feel deceived so then they may try to deceiver others.  These kind of people are among the Dangers To Avoid.   Amen?  Amen!
