Live Above Board       Jer. 7:1-15       June 19, 2011

Introduction

If the board is the ten commandments and proper worship; then God wants His people to Live Above Board.

In the text he promises blessings for this kind of living.

1.   Live Above Board . .Call Out The Word of The Lord. 7:1-2

       A.   Call Out The Word with . . Clarity. 7:1-2a

1 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD: 2 “Stand in the gate of the house of the LORD

and there call out this word: Hear the word of the LORD,

       B.   Call Out The Word with . . Concern. 7:2b

“. . . all you people? of Judah who enter through these gates to worship the LORD.

Jeremiah receives some commands from the Lord. God tells him to, “stand in the gate,” and “call out God’s Word.” God wanted these people to hear His Word and for Jeremiah to be in such a conspicuous place no one would fail to hear His Word. God was calling for a changed lifestyle. Jeremiah’s call needed to be given with clarity and concern. God was calling His people to return to Him with dedicated worship not just a matter of habit or show. I am afraid many people today just go through a certain ritual as an act of public worship and it does nothing to stir private worship or changed lives.

2.   Live Above Board . .Correct Your Life According to the Word of The Lord. 7:3-8

       A.   Correct Your Life with the . . Resolve for A Godly Lifestyle. 7: 3-4

3 “This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: Correct your ways and your deeds, and I will allow you to live in this place. 4 Do not trust deceitful words, chanting: This is the temple of the LORD, the temple of the LORD, the temple of the LORD.

       B.   Correct Your Life with the . . Repentance of A Godly Lifestyle. 7: 5-8

5 Instead, if you really change your ways and your actions, if you act justly toward one another, 6 if you no

longer oppress the foreigner, the fatherless, and the widow and no longer shed innocent blood in this place

or follow other gods, bringing harm on yourselves, 7 I will allow you to live in this place, the land I gave to

your ancestors long ago and forever. 8 But look, you keep trusting in deceitful words that cannot help.

A repetitious chanting of so called praise such as these people were doing is not pleasing to the Lord. The Lord desires the individual heart to be involved in worship. These people needed to resolve in their hearts that their worship would be different. The action of repentance needed to motive the people as they entered the temple. God wanted them to make the connection of national decline with the decline in their worship. He was willing and able to accept their repentance and to forgive their detestable lifestyle and to reinstate them as His examples of people who receive His favor and protection because of their quality of worship.

3.   Live Above Board . . Cleanse Your Life According to the Word of The Lord. 7:9-11

       A.   Cleanse Your Life with the . . Actions of a Genuine Lifestyle. 7: 9-10

9 “Do you steal, murder, commit adultery, swear falsely, burn incense to Baal, and follow other gods that

you have not known? 10 Then do you come and stand before Me in this house called by My name and say,

‘We are delivered, so we can continue doing all these detestable acts’?

       B.   Cleanse Your Life with the . . Accountability of Genuine Worship. 7: 11

11 Has this house, which is called by My name, become a den of robbers in your view? Yes, I too have seen

it.” This is the LORD’s declaration.

Why do people think they can fake their actions of worship or living for the Lord? They were not obeying the commands of the Lord. However they would claim their acts of going to the temple and participating in the acts of worship cleansed them. Their lips were involved in their worship but their hearts were far from the Lord; they were not accountable. The temple became like a den of robbers in there view. How they would think the Lord did not notice this is really hard to understand. The people neglected a proper use of the name of the Lord.

4.   Live Above Board . . Committed to the Commands of God 7:12-15

       A.   Commit To The Commands of God and . . Demonstrate Your Commitment. 7: 12-13

12 “But return to My place that was at Shiloh, where I made My name dwell at first. See what I did to it

because of the evil of My people Israel. 13 Now, because you have done all these things”—this is the

LORD’s declaration—“and because I have spoken to you time and time again but you wouldn’t listen, and

I have called to you, but you wouldn’t answer,

       B.   Commit To The Commands of God and . . Decide To Change Your Lifestyle. 7: 14-15

14 what I did to Shiloh I will do to the house that is called by My name—the house in which you trust—the

place that I gave you and your ancestors. 15 I will drive you from My presence, just as I drove out all of

your brothers, all the descendants of Ephraim.

The Lord always wants a commitment from His people. He gave the commandments for them to follow. He expects a demonstration. If you or I give some orders and rules to our children we expect to see them followed and a demonstration in their lifestyle. People will know these children are ours by the manner of life they live. The people of Israel were not living according to the commands of the Lord. God calls attention to His actions in the past and wants these people to decide to live differently. If they begin to live like the Lord wants they will Live Above Board. Amen? Amen!
