Called†††† 1 Sam. 3:1-10, 17-21 HCSB†††† June 12, 2016
A few times I have been in a pastors retreat where they asked us to get in groups and share how God called all of us into the ministry.† It is always a blessed time of fellowship.† It is great to know† you have been called of God and it gives a unique feeling in relationship to everyone at the retreat knowing we have all been Called.
1.††† Called By Godís . . Voice.††† 1 Sam. 3:1-10
A.†† The . . Rareness of Godís Voice was . . Heard By Samuel.†† 3:1-3
1 The boy Samuel served the Lord in Eli's presence. In those days the word of the Lord was rare and
prophetic visions were not widespread.
2 One day Eli, whose eyesight was failing, was lying in his room.
3 Before the lamp of God had gone out, Samuel was lying down in the tabernacle of the Lord where the ark of God was located.
B.††† The . . Realization of Hearing Godís Voice.†† 3:4-8
4 Then the Lord called Samuel, and he answered, "Here I am."
5 He ran to Eli and said, "Here I am; you called me." "I didn't call," Eli replied. "Go and lie down." So he went and lay down.
6 Once again the Lord called, "Samuel!" Samuel got up, went to Eli, and said, "Here I am; you called me."
"I didn't call, my son," he replied. "Go and lie down."††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††
7 Now Samuel had not yet experienced the Lord, because the word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him. 8 Once again, for the third time, the Lord called Samuel. He got up, went to Eli, and said, "Here I am; you called me." Then Eli understood that the Lord was calling the boy.
C.†† The . . Readiness To Hear Godís Voice was Told by Eli to Samuel.†† 3:9-10
9 He told Samuel, "Go and lie down. If He calls you, say, 'Speak, Lord, for Your servant is listening.'" So Samuel went and lay down in his place.†††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††
10 The Lord came, stood there, and called as before, "Samuel, Samuel!" Samuel responded, "Speak, for Your servant is listening."
When a Mother prays for a son and gives him to the Lord it can almost be expected that the Young man will sense the call of God on his life.† It is certainly not surprising concerning Samuel.† When I went in to the kitchen table to tell my mother I was going to announce to our church the next day that God had called me to preach she surprised me by not being surprised.† In fact she said to me she had prayed every sense I was five that† God would call me into some ministry. I asked her why she never told me that and she told me because she wanted it to be the call of God and not a momma call.† Samuel would have to know his call was from God and confirmed by God,†††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††
2.†† Called With Godís . . Message.†††† 1 Sam. 3:17-18
A.†† God Told His Message To . . Samuel.††† 3:17
17 "What was the message He gave you?" Eli asked. "Don't hide it from me. May God punish you and do so severely if you hide anything from me that He told you."
B.††† Eli Told Samuel To . . Share Godís Message to Him.††† 3:18
18 So Samuel told him everything and did not hide anything from him. Eli responded, "He is the Lord.
He will do what He thinks is good,
Samuel thought God was calling but though Eli was involved so he went into Samuel as to answer his call.
On the third time of the call Eli told him it was the Lord and to tell him speak for your servant hears and God spoke to him.† Then he told Eli what God had said.† God had not been speaking to the nation or through his prophets.† Eli knew God was not speaking because his sons, the priest were nor righteous† or Godly men.† If you look around the state you might fine a place where Godís word is being preached and also places where the word is denied.†† Let us pray for godly men to be raised up for our pastorates.
3.††† Called Confirmed Samuel To Be Godís . . Prophet.††† 1 Sam. 3:19-21
A.†† God Caused What Samuel Said to be . . Correct.†† 3:19†††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††
19 Samuel grew, and the Lord was with him and let nothing he said prove false.
B.††† God Caused Samuel to be a . . Confirmed Prophet.†† 3:20-21
20 All Israel from Dan to Beer‑sheba knew that Samuel was confirmed as a Prophet of the Lord.
21 The Lord continued to appear in Shiloh, because there He revealed Himself to Samuel by His word.
The hand of God was on Samuel and caused his speech to be correct.† The people knew God was revealing† himself to him because God revealed Himself through His word to Him.† Today I have heard some preachers get up to preach and talk about preaching the word of God but you never have to open your bible to check the word.
The man may have a great voice and good gestes but he is not grounded in the word of God.† I wonder if this man is really Called!
