The Leadership Dare      Jos. 1:1-11, 16-18 (HCSB)      June 03, 2012

Introduction

We need leaders in this nation. I would like to see more come forward that truly take the Lord at His word and follow Him.

1.    Dare:    To Rely on the Lord’s . . Promises of God. 1:1-5a

A.   Rely on the Promise about the . . Securing of the Land. 1:1-3

1 After the death of Moses the LORD’s servant, the LORD spoke to Joshua son of Nun, who had served

Moses:

2 “Moses My servant is dead. Now you and all the people prepare to cross over the Jordan to the land I am

giving the Israelites.

3 I have given you every place where the sole of your foot treads, just as I promised Moses.

B.   Rely on the Promise about the . . Safety of the Conquering. 1:4-5

4 Your territory will be from the wilderness and Lebanon to the great Euphrates River—all the land of the

Hittites—and west to the Mediterranean Sea.

5 No one will be able to stand against you as long as you live.. . . “

I think you know of someone or rely yourself on the word of God for a needed promise at some time or all the time in life. Have you ever had an experience where you wanted a property or house but the Lord convinced you differently and as you relied on Him and His word you finally got a better result than you originally thought? The promise that no one could stand against Joshua is an interesting one and certainly proved to be true as he lived in obedience. I do not want to cause doubt of the word of God but simply give the reassurance of how reliable it is. Even if difficulty came at a time you know you were trusting the Lord, He has promised to never leave us or forsake us.

2.    Dare:    To Rely on the Lord’s . . Presence of God. 1:5b-9

A.   Rely on the . . Example of God’s Presence. 1:5b-6

5b “. . . I will be with you, just as I was with Moses. I will not leave you or forsake you.

6 “Be strong and courageous, for you will distribute the land I swore to their fathers to give them as an

inheritance.

B.   Rely on the . . Encouragement of God’s Presence. 1:5b-6

7 Above all, be strong and very courageous to carefully observe the whole instruction My servant Moses

commanded you. Do not turn from it to the right or the left, so that you will have success wherever you go.

8 This book of instruction must not depart from your mouth; you are to recite it day and night so that you

may carefully observe everything written in it. For then you will prosper and succeed in whatever you do.

9 Haven’t I commanded you: be strong and courageous? Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the LORD

your God is with you wherever you go.”

Joshua knew how God lead and took care of Moses. So He understood how significant the Lord promise to take care of him and the promises he received. We likewise can rely on the promises of God. In the world today the word success is very prominent in the business world. The Bible doesn’t use the word success very much but here in the text it is very prominent to Joshua and his reliance on the word of God. Did you ever relate the Word to success? Someday ask Joshua how important it became for him. I have been doing some comparrisons on children who were raise in a Christian home and chose to do daily Bible studies and try to follow what the Lord’s word tells them. So far my comparisons have not been numerous but significant.

3.    Dare :   To Rely on Your . . Practical Obedience. 1:10-11

A.   Rely on the . . Officers of the People. 1:10

10 Then Joshua commanded the officers of the people:

B.   Rely on the . . Organization of the People. 1:11

11 “Go through the camp and tell the people, ‘Get provisions ready for yourselves, for within three days you will be crossing the Jordan to go in and take possession of the land the LORD your God is giving you to inherit.’”

God told the Joshua and the people of Israel how He was going to conquer and not He urges them to soon get ready. In doing this He urged a very practical obedience. He wanted to lead with the officers in the places and for there to be some preparation in the amout of food they would need. Once again He reasurers them of their victory. They surely have the promises to do a mighty work if they followed.

4.    Dare:    To Rely On The Lord’s . . Plan for Conquering. 1:16-18

A.   Rely on the . . Commands from Joshua. 1:16-17

16 They answered Joshua, “Everything you have commanded us we will do, and everywhere you send us

we will go.

17 We will obey you, just as we obeyed Moses in everything. And may the LORD your God be with you,

as He was with Moses.

B.   Rely on the . . Courageousness Of Joshua. 1:18

18 Anyone who rebels against your order and does not obey your words in all that you command him, will be put to death. Above all, be strong and courageous!”

The people told Joshua they would be obedient to all of his commands. They sighted Joshuas obedience to follow Moses and promised their obedience would be similar. When a great leader follows his commander he sets a very good example of how others should follow him when he is the leader. The people wanted Joshua to be very courageous and they would take care of those who chose to be disobedient or try to cause disent. Joshua gave a great example of one who took The Leadership Dare. Amen? Amen!
