Be Focused     May 15     Col.3:1-17

Illustration

I am a baseball fan and love to see my ball team focused on the fundamentals of the game and playing well.

Christians need to keep the fundamentals in mind and truly Be Focused on them. Christianity is not hard when we follow Christ.

1.   Be Focused With Your . . Mind On Heaven. 3:1-4

A.   The Mind Focused on Heaven Requires A . . Setting of the Mind. 3:1-2

1 So if you have been raised with the Messiah, seek what is above, where the Messiah is, seated at the right

hand of God. 2 Set your minds on what is above, not on what is on the earth.

B.   The Mind Focused on Heaven Results In A . . Successful Outcome. 3:3-4

3 For you have died, and your life is hidden with the Messiah in God. 4 When the Messiah, who is your life, is revealed, then you also will be revealed with Him in glory.

The reason many Christians find difficulty focusing on the mind of Christ comes from their lack of a mind set on this way of life. They do not make a decision to focus on the lifestyle of Christ. How does that happen? We get to busy in the cares of the world. Many think the details of their life are to mundane to take to the Lord.

It helped me one time to hear if the Lord knows of a sparrow falling from the sky, He is not too busy too be concerned and involved in my daily cares. When we fix our mind on the Lord and the way He wants us to live

we will enjoy a successful lifestyle. He promises we will ultimately be with Him in glory. We sing, “Oh that will be glory for me”.

2.   Be Focused On The . . Morality of A Heavenly Character. 3:5-11

A.   The Focus on the Morality of Heaven Causes A . . Putting Away Of An Old Lifestyle. 3:5-8

5 Therefore, put to death whatever in you is worldly: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desire, and

greed, which is idolatry. 6 Because of these, God's wrath comes on the disobedient, 7 and you once walked

in these things when you were living in them. 8 But now you must also put away all the following: anger,

wrath, malice, slander, and filthy language from your mouth.

B.   The Focus on the Morality of Heaven Causes A . . Putting On Of A New Lifestyle. 3:9-11

9 Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his practices 10 and have put on the new man, who is being renewed in knowledge according to the image of his Creator. 11 Here there is not Greek and Jew, circumcision and uncircumcision, barbarian, Scythian, slave and free; but Christ is all and in all.

Ever so often a rather prominent Christian confesses to an immoral lifestyle. How does that happen? That person has succumbed to the morality of the world. Rather than putting away the old lifestyle he or she allowed it to creep into their life. Satan can make it look attractive and desirable. The Book of Hebrews speaks of the, “pleasures of sin.” But those pleasures result in a terrible time of grieve for one who is really a Christian.

Out text tells us to put aside the old lifestyle and put on the new lifestyle. We are to put to death whatever in us is worldly. Christ promises and gives to us a new life that He renews as we walk with Him and learn more about Him and His ways.

3.   Be Focused With Your . . Message Centered In The Messiah. 3:12-17

A.   Focused on the Messiah’s Message and . . Lifestyle. 3:12-15

12 Therefore, God's chosen ones, holy and loved, put on heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience, 13 accepting one another and forgiving one another if anyone has a complaint against another. Just as the Lord has forgiven you, so also you must forgive. 14 Above all, put on love—the perfect bond of unity. 15 And let the peace of the Messiah, to which you were also called in one body, control your hearts. Be thankful.

B.   Focused on the Messiah’s Message and . . Lordship. 3:16-17

16 Let the message about the Messiah dwell richly among you, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, and singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, with gratitude in your hearts to God. 17 And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.        When our actions center in the message and lifestyle of Christ we will certainly magnify Him. He desires that lifestyle for us and enables us to have it as we submit to the leading of the Holy Spirit in our life. We have all heard stories about someone either very young are ignorant of how a Christian can live asking a dedicated Christian if they are Jesus. That is quite a testimony and one that Jesus would like to see in all of His children.

Paul urges us to do everything in the name of Jesus. That evidently is possible or he would not asked it of us. It definitely would have to allow our attitudes to be surrendered to Christ with a desire to life under the Lordship of Christ. If we do that we will certainly Be Focused. Amen? Amen!
