Treasure Mothers Pro. 31:10-31 May 11, 2014
chapter of Proverbs takes every letter of the Hebrew alphabet and
use the letters to give some praise to a mother who is treasured.
Many people have or had such a mother. This kind of woman will
make an outstanding contribution to a person’s life and country. I
am pleased God gave me such a mother and wife.
1. Treasure Mothers for Their . . Diligence. 31:10-19
A. Treasure Mothers for Their Diligence in . . Many Ways. 31:10-15
10 Who can find a capable wife? She is far more precious than jewels.
11 The heart of her husband trusts in her, and he will not lack anything good.
12 She rewards him with good, not evil, all the days of her life.
13 She selects wool and flax and works with willing hands.
14 She is like the merchant ships, bringing her food from far away.
15 She rises while it is still night and provides food for her household and portions for her servants.
B. Treasure Mothers for Their Diligence in . . Multiple Ways. 31:16-19
16 She evaluates a field and buys it; she plants a vineyard with her earnings.
17 She draws on her strength and reveals that her arms are strong.
18 She sees that her profits are good, and her lamp never goes out at night.
19 She extends her hands to the spinning staff, and her hands hold the spindle.
My mother was diligent for many reasons, but one happens to be because she felt like she made a mistake when she married my dad. There were days we would not have had food on the table if it had not been for my mother having a job outside of the home. She was a diligent worker and we children did not realize it then but when we were adults we understood. Women who have to take on that burden because of the sin of their husbands certainly bless their homes. The woman in the text was a good business woman and made very good investments and demonstrated a diligent work ethic.
2. Treasure Mothers for Their . . Diligently Concerned. 31:20
A. Treasure Mothers for Their Diligence in . . Money Ways. 31:20a
20 Her hands reach out to the poor,. . .”
B. Treasure Mothers for Their Diligence in . . Many Ways. 31:20b
“. . . and she extends her hands to the needy.”
This woman reached out to help the poor. My mom did not do that but she would certainly invite them to eat with us and we would just share what we had. For my mom and family this was a long time ago and in our neighborhood we all had similar needs but, I don’t think anyone really thought of our family as being poor or our neighborhood being poor. My mom would have led out in our community to help if someone was considered poorer than we were. If someone was considered in need the community would have responded together and tried to help with money or many other ways.
3. Treasure Mothers for Their . . Dedication. 31:21-29
A. Treasure Mothers for Their Dedication In . . Planning. 31:21
21 She is not afraid for her household when it snows, for all in her household are doubly clothed.
22 She makes her own bed coverings; her clothing is fine linen and purple.
23 Her husband is known at the city gates, where he sits among the elders of the land.
24 She makes and sells linen garments; she delivers belts to the merchants.
B. Treasure Mothers for Their Dedication and . . Praise. 31:21
25 Strength and honor are her clothing, and she can laugh at the time to come.
26 She opens her mouth with wisdom, and loving instruction is on her tongue.
27 She watches over the activities of her household and is never idle.
28 Her sons rise up and call her blessed. Her husband also praises her:
29 "Many women are capable, but you surpass them all!"
Many if not all of our mothers knew to plan ahead for weather conditions or severe conditions
in the communities. Many mothers knew how to plan ahead and make clothes or save the money
to buy the needs our families would have. As I look back I can remember wanting a particular birthday present but did not really understand the finances necessary. Mom did and on a particular birthday the gift I wanted was
in the living room for me to take out and ride. I really enjoyed that gift and realize today it took planning and saving. My mother really enjoyed getting me that gift because I enjoyed it so much. I praised her for that gift for years to come.
4. Treasure Mothers for Their . . Devotion. 31:30-31
A. Treasure Mothers for Their Devotion in . . Many Ways. 31:30
30 Charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting, but a woman who fears the Lord will be praised.
B. Treasure Mothers for Their Devotion in . . Many Ways. 31:31
31 Give her the reward of her labor, and let her works praise her at the city gates.
At my mother’s funeral some ladies came up to pay there respects and said, “your mom was the best Sunday School Teacher I ever had.” That praise still lingers. My mom taught for over 40 years and I remember her studying the lesson late in the night. She loved doing it. For me it really is a pleasure to be among those who Treasure Mothers. Amen? Amen!
