Act With Humility 1 Peter 5:1-14 April 29, 2007

Introduction

The quality of genuine humility in a person usually cause people to give prominence to a person. On the other hand if someone tries to gain prominence without humility they usually fall flat on their face. The text teaches us that God alone will give the lasting reward for humble service. Recently I attended a funeral for a humble man, people honored his humble service.

1.    Act With Humility . . Set An Example. 5:1-4

       A.   Set The Example . . Eagerly. 5:1-2

1 Therefore, as a fellow elder and witness to the sufferings of the Messiah, and also a participant in the glory about to be revealed, I exhort the elders among you:

2 shepherd God’s flock among you, not overseeing out of compulsion but freely, according to God’s

       {will] ; not for the money but eagerly;

       B.   Set The Example . . Expectantly. 5:3-4

3 not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock.

4 And when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory.

Peter speaks to the pastors, and wants them to set the example of expectant leadership for the flock of God.

My friends Jim McNiel Will Pollard, and Jim Pruitt reflect often how our pastor (Mack Douglas) influenced us. I remember seeing him crawl around the worship area on his knees hugging every pew praying for any and all lost people who might sit on that pew during the upcoming revival. He did not know anyone else saw him, but several youth quietly came into the all night prayer meeting and our pastor was the only one there. We noted several people were saved during that revival. Our pastor gave a humble but expectant example.

2.    Act With Humility . . Submissively. 5:5-7

       A.   Submit To Elders . . Consciously. 5:5a

5 Likewise, you younger men, be subject to the elders. . . .”

       B.   Submit To All . . Cautiously. 5:5b

“And all of you clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.

       C.   Submit To God . . Considerately. 5:6-7

6 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, so that He may exalt you in due time,

7 casting all your care upon Him, because He cares about you.

Humility acts with submission. It is conscious, cautious, and considerate submission. The text tells younger men to submit to elders. A man of seniority in the faith usually receives conscious submission from the younger men. Sometimes a man may be older but not as wise in the matters of the faith. Our submission needs to cautiously recognize the Lord gives grace to the humble. Biblical submission considers the “mighty hand of God,” and knows He cares for us.

3.    Act With Humility . . Stand Firm Against The Devil. 5:8-9

       A.   Stand Firm With . . Alertness. 5:8

8 Be sober! Be on the alert! Your adversary the Devil is prowling around like a roaring lion, looking for anyone he can devour.

       B.   Stand Firm With . . Acknowledgment. 5:9

9 Resist him, firm in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are being experienced by your brothers

       in the world.

We need to act humbly standing firm with alertness to the Devil, and acknowledging how our brothers and sisters stand resisting him. It is interesting how the Devil acts like a roaring lion, but the Bible tells us Jesus is a Lion. He is the “Lion of the Tribe of Judah.” In the chronicles of Narnia, when the Lion rises from the dead, I had to stand and shout, “praise God the Lion of the tribe of Judah has arisen.” Lions are wise animals especially in pursuit of their prey. When we think we are suffering we must praise God and seek His strength.

4.    Act With Humility . . Strengthened By The Lord. 5:10-14

       A.   Strengthened Through . . Suffering. 5:10-11

10 Now the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ Jesus, will personally restore, establish, strengthen, and support you after you have suffered a little. 11 To Him be the dominion forever. Amen.

B.   Strengthened Through . . Sanding In Grace. 5:12

12 Through Silvanus, whom I consider a faithful brother, I have written briefly, encouraging you and

testifying that this is the true grace of God. Take your stand in it!

C.   Strengthened Through . . Support Of The Churches. 5:13-14

13 She who is in Babylon, also chosen, sends you greetings, as does Mark, my son .

14 Greet one another with a kiss of love. Peace to all of you who are in Christ. 1 Peter 5:1-14 (HCSB)

Most people will say they learned a new dimensions of trust, and have been strengthened in their faith through suffering. We need more Christians standing in grace proclaiming the ways of God. Then humility is strengthened through the support we gain from the church. It is sad when people hinder the church. It is also sad when a church majority hinders the growth of individual Christians. I give testimony often to the enormous contribution the church makes, and made to my life, and the life of my family. Because of that it is my desire to, Act With Humility. Amen? Amen!
