The Lord Is Alive Matt. 28:1-17 HCSB April 12, 2009

Introduction

You ask me how I know He lives? He lives within my heart. What a great story this passage of scripture tells. We who know Jesus can proclaim. Yes! The Lord Is Alive!

1.   The Lord Is Alive And There Is An . . Earth Shaking. 28:1-4

       A.   The . . Surprise Of The Earth Shaking. 28:1

1 After the Sabbath, as the first day of the week was dawning, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to view the tomb.

       B.   The . . Suddenness Of The Earth Shaking. 28:2-3

2 Suddenly there was a violent earthquake, because an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and approached the tomb. He rolled back the stone and was sitting on it. 3 His appearance was like lightning, and his robe was as white as snow.

       C.   The . . Shaking From The Earth Shaking. 28:4

4 The guards were so shaken from fear of him that they became like dead men.

When the angel rolled back the stone, not to let Jesus out of the tomb, but to let others come in, the earth shook. Maybe the earth shaking relayed the joy the earth expressed. But the ladies coming to the tomb were surprised. They did not expect this event, and it happened suddenly. Why did the angel sit on the stone, my friend, Burnell Lewis, says, “he wanted to see all heaven break loose.” I like that! It seems humorous to me that the guards were so shaken that they became like dead men.

2.   The Lord Is Alive And There Is . . Encouragement From An Angel. 28:5-7

       A.   Encouragement In . . Fear. 28:5

5 But the angel told the women, "Don't be afraid, because I know you are looking for Jesus who was crucified.

       B.   Encouragement In . . Facts. 28:6

6 He is not here! For He has been resurrected, just as He said. Come and see the place where He lay.

       C.   Encouragement In . . Followers. 28:7

7 Then go quickly and tell His disciples, 'He has been raised from the dead. In fact, He is going ahead of you to Galilee; you will see Him there.' Listen, I have told you."

The Lord gave encouragement to the ladies as the angel assured them in their fear with the facts and an assignment for the other followers. The angel invited the ladies to personally investigate the empty tomb to see for themselves the fact of the empty tomb. With this knowledge the ladies were told to go share with the disciples. The message of the resurrection is an exciting message that some still have not heard. Let us go tell!

3.   The Lord Is Alive And There Is . . Enjoyment. 28:8-10

       A.   Enjoyment In The Opportunity To . . Tell. 28:8

8 So, departing quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, they ran to tell His disciples the news.

       B.   Enjoyment In The Opportunity To . . Touch 28:9

9 Just then Jesus met them and said, "Good morning!" They came up, took hold of His feet, and worshiped Him.

       C.   Enjoyment In The Opportunity To . . Transport. 28:10

10 Then Jesus told them, "Do not be afraid. Go and tell My brothers to leave for Galilee, and they will

              see Me there."

When we talk with those of other beliefs they must hang their head because the do not have the enjoyment of a living Lord. The ladies at the tomb were told to tell this good news. Then Jesus appeared and they were able to touch and hold Jesus. They saw, heard, and felt the resurrected Lord and transported that message to the disciples and inviting them to meet the Lord in Galilee.

4.   The Lord Is Alive And There Is . . Enemy Activity. 28:11-17

       A.   Enemy Activity By The . . Soldiers. 28:11

11 As they were on their way, some of the guard came into the city and reported to the

chief priests everything that had happened.

       B.   Enemy Activity By The . . Sanhedren. 28:12-15

12 After the priests had assembled with the elders and agreed on a plan, they gave the soldiers a large sum of money 13 and told them, "Say this, 'His disciples came during the night and stole Him while we were sleeping.' 14 If this reaches the governor's ears, we will deal with him and keep you out of trouble." 15 So they took the money and did as they were instructed. And this story has been spread among Jewish people to this day.

When did the enemy begin to be active in trying to deny the resurrection? In a matter of hours. The solders and the Jewish Sanhedrin plotted together to create a phony story. It is amazing how some people believe that story even today. In my opinion it is harder to believe than the resurrection. It certainly does not explain the transformation in the disciple activity. The would not have died the deaths they died for a lie.

5.   The Lord Is Alive And There Is . . Exaltation. 28:16-17

      A.  Exaltation In The . . Witness. 28:16

16 The 11 disciples traveled to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had directed them.

      B.  Exaltation In The . . Worship. 28:17

17 When they saw Him, they worshiped, but some doubted. HCSB

This Easter all over the world people will meet to celebrate the resurrection. Christians do this to give a witness of their beliefs and to worship the Lord. How sad that some just make this day a holiday and take vacations or weekend trips. Yet we who know the Lord rejoice in the opportunity to exalt the Lord in a special emphasis of worship on that day. Yes! The Lord Is Alive! Amen? Amen!
