Believe in the Risen Lord     Matt. 28:1-10, 16-20     March 31, 2013

Introduction

No other belief system has a resurrection. So we definitely Believe in the Risen Lord.

1.   Believe in the Risen Lord . . Regarding the Empty Tomb. 28:1-4

       A.   Regarding the . . Visitors to the Tomb. 28:1

1 After the Sabbath, as the first day of the week was dawning, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to

       view the tomb.

       B.   Regarding the . . Violent Earthquake as the Tomb was Moved. 28:2a

2 Suddenly there was a violent earthquake, because an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and approached the tomb. He rolled back the stone and was sitting on it.

       C.   Regarding the . . Vision of the Angel Sitting on the Stone. 28:2b-3

“. . . because an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and approached the tomb. He rolled back the stone and was sitting on it. 3 His appearance was like lightning, and his robe was as white as snow.

       D.   Regarding the . . Vacating Lapse of the Guards at the Tomb. 28:4

4 The guards were so shaken from fear of him that they became like dead men.

Consider the ladies visiting the tomb, the violent

earthquake, vision of the angel and the vacating lapse of the guards who were supposed to guard the tomb. In the first century a ladies testimony was not considered that reliable but these ladies were so convinced and convincing the disciples checked it out and

many others believed Christ arose. If you have truth to share it is

not that important what the people think or say you know you

shared truth and God blesses the truth. Eventually the truth will be

made known. There will be no one denying the resurrection when

Christ returns.

2.   Believe in the Risen Lord . . Recalling what Jesus Predicted. 28:5-7

      A.  Recalling Jesus Words As They . . Confirmed the Resurrection. 28:5-6

5 But the angel told the women, "Don't be afraid, because I

know you are looking for Jesus who was crucified. 6 He is not

here! For He has been resurrected, just as He said. Come and see

the place where He lay.

      B.  Recalling Jesus Words As They . . Communicated the Resurrection. 28:5-6

7 Then go quickly and tell His disciples, 'He has been raised

from the dead. In fact, He is going ahead of you to Galilee; you will see Him there.' Listen, I have told you."

Jesus told the disciples before his death that He would resurrect. Obviously they did not fully understand but note the words the angel uses as he tells them “just as He said.” He simply reminded them what Jesus told them and noted it was exactly like He told them. I take encouragement from those words and know I can believe all the Lord tells me will come about just like He said. The Angel told these ladies to go tell and as you go you will see the resurrected Christ as He is going ahead of you. It is interesting that the message of Christ is always one we are to share with others. Just as He went before These ladies He promises to be with us as we go into all the world,

3.   Believe in the Risen Lord As He . . Resurrected and Appeared to the Ladies. 28:8-10

      A.  Resurrected and Appeared to the Ladies and . . Greeted Them. 28:8-9

8 So, departing quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy,

they ran to tell His disciples the news. 9 Just then Jesus met them

and said, "Good morning!" They came up, took hold of His feet,

and worshiped Him.

      B.  Resurrected and Appeared to the Ladies and Told Them to . . Go Tell. 28:10

10 Then Jesus told them, "Do not be afraid. Go and tell My

brothers to leave for Galilee, and they will see Me there."

I think it is humorous for Jesus to just up and greet the ladies with a, “Good Morning.” I think they would have been over joyed but at the same time somewhat shocked. There response is like most Christians would do as they worshiped Jesus and fell at His

feet. What a great experience for these ladies. Some day all of

who know Him can do something similar in our worship. Don’t

you find it interesting that both the angels and Christ told the Ladies to go? This is a privilege of all Christians as we have been told in the great commission to “Go.

4.   Believe in the Risen Lord . . Reasoning about the Churches Growth. 28:16-20

      A.  Reasoning about the Churches Growth but

Some . . Doubted. 28:16-17

16 The 11 disciples traveled to Galilee, to the mountain where

Jesus had directed them. 17 When they saw Him, they worshiped, but some doubted.

      B.  Reasoning about the Churches Growth and Encouraged . . Discipleship. 28:18-20

18 Then Jesus came near and said to them, "All authority has

been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go, therefore, and

make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the

Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to

observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age." (HCSB)

You know Christianity invites reasoning about the resurrection. We encourage investigation and most of us like to debate in a kindly manner the truth of Christianity. Other belief systems do not like to do that. It is interesting to note some doubted. It probably was hard to immediately believe you were seeing the Lord. But He made Himself available for further investigation. In the text Jesus was encouraging discipleship. It is a joy to disciple new believers. As I look back the Sunday school and church training really did a good job of discipling me. Do you know we have added the phrase, “Great Commission Baptist” to our official name? Part of the reason is that we Believe in the Risen Lord. Amen? Amen!
