Stay Spiritually Alert Isa. 38:1-6; 39:1-2, 5-8 HCSB March 29:, 2009
Hezekiah serves as one of the more godly kings of the Old Testament. If you illustrate the spirituality of all the kings on a graph of valleys and mountain peaks his service will illustrate one of the highest peaks. But like all humans he also displays some times of neglect and pride that takes away from his spiritual legacy. Let each us receive from him a challenge to Stay Spiritually Alert.
1. Stay Spiritually Alert: It May Add . . Time To Your Life. Isa. 38:1-6
A. Stay Spiritually Alert And Tuned To . . Receive An Undesirable Message Of The Prophet. 38:1
1 In those days Hezekiah became terminally ill. The prophet Isaiah son of Amoz came and said to him, "This is what the Lord says: 'Put your affairs in order, for you are about to die; you will not recover.'"
B. Stay Spiritually Alert And Tuned To . . Requesting A Desirable Message From God. 38:2-3
2 Then Hezekiah turned his face to the wall and prayed to the Lord. 3 He said, "Please, Lord, remember how I have walked before You faithfully and wholeheartedly, and have done what is good in Your sight." And Hezekiah wept bitterly.
C. Stay Spiritually Alert And Tuned To . . Rejoicing With A Desirable Message From God. 38:4-6
4 Then the word of the Lord came to Isaiah: 5 "Go and tell Hezekiah that this is what the Lord God of
your ancestor David says: I have heard your prayer; I have seen your tears. Look, I am going to add 15 years
to your life. 6 And I will deliver you and this city from the hand of the king of Assyria; I will defend this
Can you tell when someone possesses a spiritual alertness? Many times it is very noticeable as it gives one a quality of life others do not have. How does a spiritual person receive an undesirable message? This person usually does not fall apart but takes the message in stride. This one can also take the news to the Lord and ask Him to change the situation. Hezekiah wept bitterly before the Lord, but not before those who could do nothing to change his situation. Spiritually alert people receive answers from the Lord and rejoices in them. What a blessing to receive a special addition of time from the Lord.
2. Stay Spiritually Alert It May Add . . Treasure To Your Life. Isa. 39:1-2
A. Stay Spiritually Alert And Possibly . . Gain Gifts For Your Treasure. 39:1
1 At that time Merodach-baladan son of Baladan, king of Babylon, sent letters and a gift to Hezekiah since he heard that he had been sick and had recovered.
B. Stay Spiritually Alert And Possibly . . Gather Gifts For Your Treasure. 39:2
2 Hezekiah was pleased with them, and showed them his treasure house—the silver, the gold, the
spices, and the precious oil—and all his armory, and everything that was found in his treasuries. There was
nothing in his palace and in all his realm that Hezekiah did not show them.
Hezekiah gained a gift from another king because God gave him additional time. Spiritual people generally gain more spiritual blessings from the Lord and monetary help from others. The king gathered so many monetary gifts he had to store them in his treasure house. Did the king step away from a spiritual lifestyle as he displayed the accumulated wealth? Was he trusting in the Lord or trying to impress another king? You and I may never have a treasure house but our homes may display gifts and expression of appreciation gained through times of spiritual alertness. These must never be displays to glorify us but the Lord. In my office I have a blessings file where I place notes, letters, and other significant communications I have received through the years. These came my way because the Lord gave a time of spiritual alertness. Hopefully they will always be displayed in order to remind me of what the Lord did.
3. Stay Spiritually Alert It May Add . . Tranquillity To Your Life. Isa. 39:5-8
A. Stay Spiritually Alert To A . . Sad Message. 39:5-6
5 Then Isaiah said to Hezekiah, "Hear the word of the Lord of Hosts: 6 'The time will certainly come
when everything in your palace and all that your fathers have stored up until this day will be carried off to Babylon; nothing will be left,' says the Lord.
B. Stay Spiritually Alert To A . . Serene Message. 39:5-6
7 'Some of your descendants who come from you will be taken away, and they will be eunuchs in the
palace of the king of Babylon.'" 8 Then Hezekiah said to Isaiah, "The word of the Lord that you have spoken is good." For he thought: There will be peace and security during my lifetime.
Hezekiah’s lapse from the spiritual caused him to receive a sad message. The wealth he displayed will all be taken away when Babylon overtakes the entire nation. The major cause of this downfall comes from his son not following the ways of the Lord. How does the king evaluate the message for his lifetime in serenity and peace when the effect will eventually bring destruction and captivity to his nation? How can anyone be serene
about the news their descendants will be taken captive. Hezekiah did not stay spiritually alert and it affected his
legacy and may teach us to Stay Spiritually Alert. Amen? Amen!
