Empowered     Acts 2: 1-15 HCSB     March 13, 2016

Introduction

Those who have a familiarity with the Bible know Jesus said “. . . you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you,. . .”    Well if all the people present at the time had known that statement from Jesus they might have understood a little more about what was happening.  But nobody except Jesus really knew exactly what the details for the day of Pentecost would be, even if they had more understanding.  However the disciples would know they were going to be Empowered.

1.    Empowered As the . . Magnificent Power of The Spirit Is Given.    2:1-4

A.   Power of the Spirit Gave Tongues and . . Divided Among the Believers.   2:1-3

1 When the day of Pentecost had arrived, they were all together in one place.

2 Suddenly a sound like that of a violent rushing wind came from heaven, and it filled the whole house

where they were staying.

3 And tongues, like flames of fire that were divided, appeared to them and rested on each one of them.

B.    Power of the Spirit Gave . . Different Languages to the Believers.   2:4

4 Then they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different languages, as the Spirit

gave them ability for speech.

The gift of Languages was divided throughout the gathering of Believers and everyone of them spoke in an unknown language.  These gifts were caused by the Holy Spirit.  No one spoke in some kind of gibberish but all spoke so people of their language could hear in their own personal tongue.  Some few people today say this gift of tongues is evidence you’re a Christian.  That is not a true point of theology.  Salvation is caused by grace as The Holy Spirit convicts people of their sin and draws them to come to Jesus as all who ask the Lord for His salvation will not be turned away but they will be received just like Jesus promised.  Jesus had told them to go into all the world and share the gospel.  How can they do that if they can’t speak the language of these countries?  This day, and it’s experiences should answer that question as they all received a foreign language gift.

2.    Empowered As . . Many Languages are Spoken.   2:5-13

A.   Many Languages Caused . . Confusion.   2:5-11

5 There were Jews living in Jerusalem, devout men from every nation under heaven.

6 When this sound occurred, the multitude came together and was confused because each one heard them speaking in his own language.

7 And they were astounded and amazed, saying, "Look, aren't all these who are speaking Galileans?

8 How is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language?

9 Parthians, Medes, Elamites; those who live in Mesopotamia, in Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,

10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes,

11 Cretans and Arabs—we hear them speaking in our own languages the magnificent acts of God."

B.    Many Languages Caused by the Haply Spirit . . Curiosity and Incorrect Statements by the spirit

of men Spirit.   2:5-12-13

12 And they were all astounded and perplexed, saying to one another, "What could this be?"

13 But some sneered and said, "They're full of new wine!"

All of these different languages caused the non-believers to be confused because they all heard what was being said in their language; but all who spoke were  Galileans.  They were confused not knowing about the gift of the Spirit or understanding the promise of Jesus.  It is interesting that no confusion is expressed by the Believers.  The curiosity was expressed by the non-believers.  Their people spoke incorrectly as they attributed this speech to these people being full of new wine.  That is a very unusual conclusion as they were thinking intoxicated people could speak new languages that people would understand.

3.    Empowered And The  . . Mighty Power of God Spoke through Simon Peter.   2:14-15

A.   Mighty Power Spoke through Simon Peter . . Addressing those in Jerusalem.   2:14

14 But Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice, and proclaimed to them: "Jewish men and all you

residents of Jerusalem, let this be known to you and pay attention to my words.

B.    Mighty Power Spoke through Simon Peter . . Adjusting their Incorrect Thoughts.   2:15

15 For these people are not drunk, as you suppose, since it's only nine in the morning.   HCSB

Peter answered the thought that these believers were drunk by calling attention to the fact it was too early in the morning as the taverns were not open yet.  It is not reasonable to think alcohol could help you with your speaking a language you did not know.   Most people who consume alcoholic drink don’t even speak their natural language as well as they had before they consumed some alcoholic beverage.  Of course today we know the people who do not know or understand the work of the Holy Spirit just cannot explain His work.  These believers were Empowered by the Spirit to speak in these languages.  Amen?  Amen!
