Are You Ready?    1 Thess 5:1-11    Jan. 25, 2009

Introduction

In this lesson a very interesting expression occurs. It is, “the day of the Lord.” To what does this phrase

refer? Many biblical scholars say it relates to the time immediately after the rapture of the church and all the way to the great white throne judgement of our Lord. I personally agree but however you interpret that phrase it is very important to know you are ready for His return. If anyone asks us, Are You Ready? All born again believers need to proudly proclaim, “Yes!”

1.   Are You Ready for the . . Suddenness Of Christ Return? 5:1-3

       A.   The .. Awareness Of Some About His Sudden Return. 5:1-2

1 About the times and the seasons: brothers, you do not need anything to be written to you. 2 For you

yourselves know very well that the Day of the Lord will come just like a thief in the night.

       B.   The .. Absurdity Of Some About His Sudden Return. 5:3

3 When they say, "Peace and security," then sudden destruction comes on them, like labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.

              1.    Ignorance about their . . Sayings.

              2.    Ignorance about the . . Suddenness.

The text declares the return of Christ will take place suddenly. In another passage it likens the return to the twinkling of an eye. Many of His children know about His return; some investigate more than others about it and become very good students of prophecy. All of us can read and believe the simple statements promising His return. There have always been scoffers making absurd statements about His return, but Christ will one day come for His children and the mockers will see the evidence of our belief too late. Let us help the scoffers repent and trust the Lord so they also will be ready.

2.   Are You Ready for the . . Sonship Of Christ Return? 5:4-7

       A.   The . . Contrast Of Sonship. 5:4-5

4 But you, brothers, are not in the dark, so that this day would overtake you like a thief.

5 For you are all sons of light and sons of the day. We're not of the night or of darkness.

       B.   The . . Consciousness Of Sonship. 5:6-7

6 So then, we must not sleep, like the rest, but we must stay awake and be sober.

7 For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk are drunk at night.

Throughout our relationships we see the contrast of sonship between a Christian and a non-believer. We are of the day and they are of the night. We live in light and they live in darkness. This happens because Jesus is the light of the world. When we make a commitment of our lives to Him, He causes us to become “salt and light.” Our consciousness of sonship makes us aware we must be alert to our opportunities. The Lord tells us, “You are witnesses.” I count it a privilege to share what I know about Christ. As a young Christian at Tower Grove Baptist Church, I availed myself to the many opportunities for training in witnessing. Today I am a certified trainer in several methods of sharing my faith. If tomorrow I hear of a new method of training I will try to get involved. I think it is part of being conscious of my sonship. Do you avail yourself to witness training?

3.   Are You Ready for the . . Soberness Of Christ Return? 5:8-11

       A.   The . . Must Invoked In Our Soberness. 5:8

8 But since we are of the day, we must be sober and put the armor of faith and love on our chests, and put on a helmet of the hope of salvation.

       B.   The . . Mercy Invoked In Our Soberness. 5:9-10

9 For God did not appoint us to wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ,

10 who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep, we will live together with Him.

       C.   The . . Motivations Invoked In Our Soberness. 5:11

11 Therefore encourage one another and build each other up as you are already doing.

Did you note the text says, “we must be sober?” The way we dress will be part of the soberness of our emphasis on the return of Christ. We will wear the dress of faith and hope. We do this with a focus on the mercy of the Lord; for it is only because of His mercy that we are ready for His return. Those who know His mercy and grace need to motivate others to be a witness and help them get to the place where they will say, “Yes,” to the question, Are You Ready? Amen? Amen!
