Depend On The Spirit John    15:26-16:15     Jan. 05. 2014

Introduction

If you take our best churches and compare them with church that make more noise about the Spirit and His gifts; I believe we Depend On The Spirt more than the other churches.

1.   Depend On The Spirit When Your . . Testimony Meets Hostility. 15:26-16:4

       A.   Hostility Towards Your Testimony . . Remember where it Came From. 15:26-27

26 "When the Counselor comes, the One I will send to you from the Father—the Spirit of truth who

proceeds from the Father—He will testify about Me.

27 You also will testify, because you have been with Me from the beginning.

       B.   Hostility Towards Your Testimony Remember the . . Reason it Comes. 16:1-4

16;1 "I have told you these things to keep you from stumbling.

2 They will ban you from the synagogues. In fact, a time is coming when anyone who kills you will think he is offering service to God. `

3 They will do these things because they haven't known the Father or Me.

4 But I have told you these things so that when their time comes you may remember I told them to you. I didn't tell you these things from the beginning, because I was with you.

Perhaps everyone who has sought to be a witness for the Father has run into some form of hostility. Everyone Who has been with Jesus should be a witness. The Scripture verses here simply declare we will be witnesses. Many things about being a witness will have to be verified but the fact that we know Him , has caused us to be a witness. Question; If you know you have been with Jesus how do you keep from being a witness? I have 5 great grand children. How do I keep from saying something about them? If you are proud of someone or something you generally will share.

2.   Depend On The Spirit When . . Trouble and Sorrow Fills the Heart. 16:5-7

       A.   Trouble and sorrow . . May Fill Your Heart. 15:5-6

5 "But now I am going away to Him who sent Me, and not one of you asks Me, 'Where are You going?'

6 Yet, because I have spoken these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart.

       B.   Trouble and sorrow May Come Remember Your . . Ministry From the Holy Spirit. 15:7

7 Nevertheless, I am telling you the truth. It is for your benefit that I go away, because if I don't go away the Counselor will not come to you. If I go, I will send Him to you.

When Jesus told the disciples He was going away trouble and sorrow filled their heart. They did not fully understand this fact but Jesus told them this must happen in order for the Holy Spirit to come into their lives. Today we understand the ministry of the Holy Spirit more than they did but we have had the advantage of the written word and the interaction with other Christians.

3.   Depend On The Spirit When the . . Tempter Seems in Control. 16:8-11

       A.   The Tempter Will Tempt Because Most . . Don’t Believe. 16:8-9

8 When He comes, He will convict the world about sin, righteousness, and judgment:

       9 about sin, because they do not believe in Me;

       B.   The Tempter Will Tempter Because The . . Devil Will Be Judged. 16:10-11

10 about righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will no longer see Me;

11 and about judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.

It is interesting to read the reasons why the Holy Spirit will convict of sin. One reason is they do not believe in Jesus. Has it registered with you that one of the reasons you believe sin is sin is due to that fact you believe in Jesus? If Jesus is in your life you can not feel good about your self and continue in a sinful life style.

However many who do not claim to have made a commitment to Jesus do not have the same ideas about sin. But one of the reasons the Holy Spirit speak about judgement comes from the fact Satan has been and will be judged.  Someday his judgement will be final and for eternity. Some times Satan is displayed with a hideous laugh; but he who laughs last will laugh loudest and that will be the Holy Father.

4.   Depend On The Spirit When More . . Truth is Needed. 16:12-15

       A.   Truth Is Needed and We Will Be . . Guided To It By The Holy Spirit. 16:12-13

12 "I still have many things to tell you, but you can't bear them now.

13 When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all the truth. For He will not speak on His own,

but He will speak whatever He hears. He will also declare to you what is to come.

B .  Truth Is Needed and It Will . . Glorify Jesus. 16:14-15

14 He will glorify Me, because He will take from what is Mine and declare it to you.

15 Everything the Father has is Mine. This is why I told you that He takes from what is Mine and will

       declare it to you.

I am pleased one of the ministries of the Holy Spirit will guide and lead into truth. If you have a thought and it does not receive confirmation in the scripture then we know the Spirit did not lead to that conclusion.

When the Spirit declares something to us we can be sure, so to speak, He checked it in a triune circle before he spoke it. His ministry is to glorify Jesus not Himself or any of us. This , no doubt, is why we can Depend On The Spirit. Amen? Amen!
