Col. 1:9-11 NASU

9 For this reason also, since the day we heard of it, we have not ceased to pray for you and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, 10 so that you will walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please Him in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; 11 strengthened with all power, according to His glorious might, for the attaining of all steadfastness and patience; joyously NASU

Introduction
Today I want to share three simple prayer request that we can pray for any Christian at any time.  If you want to know what to pray for your pastor you can always pray the three request I will give you today.

2.    A Request for the . . Pleasure of God. v 10

3.    A Request for the . . Power of God. v 11

1.    A Request for the . . Purpose of God. v 9

"For this reason also, since the day we heard of it, we have not ceased to pray for you and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding,

A.    The . . Consistent Request for the Purpose of God. v 9 a
"For this reason also, since the day we heard of it, we have not ceased to pray for you. . ."

        1.    Burdened Prayer Is Consistent.
        2.    Too much of our praying in not Consistent.
        3.    In this church we need the prayer room moved into the new building.

B.    The . . Careful Request for the Purpose of God.. v 9 b
". . . pray for you and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual. . . "

        1.    Filled = EPI - Full + GINOSIS - Know
        2.    Paul wants them to have full knowledge.
        3.    This combats the false knowledge of the GNOSTICS.
        4.    GNOSTICS = Heresy

C.    The . . Clear Request for the Purpose of God.. v 9 c
". . . His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding,"

        1.    Clearly separates His Will from Man's Will.
        2.    Clearly separates Wisdom and Understanding.

Wisdom    NT:4678 sophia (sof-ee'-ah); from NT:4680; wisdom (higher or lower, worldly or
                spiritual):         KJV-wisdom.

Understanding    NT:4907 sunesis (soon'-es-is); from NT:4920; a mental putting together, i.e.
intelligence or (concretely) the intellect: KJV-knowledge, understanding.

Illustration
The Second Baptist Church in West Plains had a member who seemed to control matters. He told Jerry Dowdy when he became pastor "there is something about you I don't like". Jerry said "well tell me about it and if it is something I can change I will try". The man said "well I don't know what it is but I will tell you when I decide". As matter went on this man opposed a matter on the church floor and said if this is passed I will resign". Someone said "I make a motion we accept his resignation" and it was quickly approved. He told some this church will never survive with out me and my money.

Last month Jerry asked the pastors to pray with the church for a piece of property on which they could relocate. He suggested to the church they pray for someone to give a nice section of land. One person said "that will never happen". So that day in May about 16 ministers said "we will pray with you on that matter".

Last week we had our June Meeting and Jerry announced someone had given a nice 5 acre particle of land. It was the purpose of God and they asked for it.

Application What is Wisdom?

James 3:13-18 13 Who among you is wise and understanding? Let him show by his good behavior his deeds in the gentleness of wisdom. 14 But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, do not be arrogant and so lie against the truth. 15 This wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, natural, demonic. 16 For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every evil thing. 17 But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, without hypocrisy. 18 And the seed whose fruit is righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace. NASU

In verse "9" we learn to pray for people to know

                                The Purpose (WILL of God)

2.    A Request for the . . Pleasure of God. v 10

    "so that you will walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please Him in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God;

A.    Request for Our . .Walk and the Pleasure of God. v 10 a
"so that you will walk in a manner worthy of the Lord,. . . "

        1.    The words "so that" relate back to the will of God.
        2.    We need to pray for the walk of our brothers and sisters
        3.    In Christ to know the will of God and walk in it.

B.    A Request for Our .. Ways and the Pleasure of God. v 10 b
        ". . . please Him in all respects, . . . "

        1.    Our Desire should be to please the Lord in all our ways.

        5.    If we bear fruit it shows in our children etc.
        6.    Physical and Spiritual.
                1) One of my son's in the ministry Fred Miller stands for his convictions.

1 Cor 16:15 NASU Now I urge you, brethren (you know the household of Stephanas, that they were the first fruits of Achaia, and that they have devoted themselves for ministry to the saints),

Rom 15:26-28 NASU 26 For Macedonia and Achaia have been pleased to make a contribution for the poor among the saints in Jerusalem. 27 Yes, they were pleased to do so, and they are indebted to them. For if the Gentiles have shared in their spiritual things, they are indebted to minister to them also in material things. 28 Therefore, when I have finished this, and have put my seal on this fruit of theirs, I will go on by way of you to Spain.

Supposedly A Quote:   If I am going to hell, then I won't be alone    Timothy McVeigh
Saddest part of that quote is that it is true

D.    A Request for Our .. Widening and the Pleasure of God. v 10 d
        ". . . and increasing in the knowledge of God; , , , "

        1.    Too many grow in Greece but not in Grace.
        2.    Do We Pray for our Brothers and Sisters to Grow?

Illustration GROWTH, SPIRITUAL:
A party of tourists, looking up to the summit of an impressive mountain, thought that by climbing one of the less hills they would improve their view. On the way they passed a party coming down, and they asked, "Is it worthwhile?" The reply came back, "Anything above the ordinary level is always worthwhile."

Illustration Are you living as a child of the King?
During the days of the French Revolution that saw King Louis XVI and his queen beheaded, history records an amazing event. After the public execution, the frenzied mob called for the dauphin: "Bring out the prince," they cried. "He's next." The lad was terrified. The prince was only six years old, but he was in line to become the next king, so he, too, had to be eliminated.

According to the storytellers, the young prince stood on the platform trembling in his black velvet coat and patent leather shoes. Long golden curls tumbled down over his shoulders. The mob cried, "Down with royalty! Eliminate all royalty! Off with his head! Kill the prince!"

Suddenly from out of the crowd came another cry: "Don't kill him. You'll only send his soul to heaven. That's too good for royalty. I say, turn him over to Meg, the old witch. She'll teach him to steal, to lie, he'll roam the streets as a tramp, and when he dies, his soul will go to hell. That's what royalty deserves!"

So the story goes, that's the advice the mob took. They turned the lad over to old Meg. This vile woman of the back alleys began to teach him bad words. But history tells us that every time this wicked woman prompted the prince to be profane, he would stubbornly stamp his little feet, clench his fist and declare, "I will not say it. I will not say those words.

I WAS BORN TO BE A KING, AND I WON'T TALK THAT WAY!"

Who are You? Are you a child of the king? Are you living that way?

It is God's pleasure for His Children to grow in holiness and their stand for Him.

Application

A Biblical Prayer Request is to Pray for the Purpose of God

In Verse "10" we learn to pray for the Pleasure of God

Our . .Walk and the Pleasure of God.

Our .. Ways and the Pleasure of God.

Our .. Work and the Pleasure of God.

Our .. Widening and the Pleasure of God.

3.    A Request for the . . Power of God. v 11

"strengthened with all power, according to His glorious might, for the attaining of all steadfastness and patience; joyously

A.    A Request for Power to be . . Strong In the Power of God. v 11 a
". . . "strengthened with all power, according to His glorious might,

        1.    Strengthened = Enabled.
        2.    Power = the Stamina He Enables us to have.
        3.    Might = Dominion or Authority.
        4.    These Words Refer To Spiritual Strength.

Judges 16:20 And she said, The Philistines be upon thee, Samson. And he awoke out of his sleep, and said, I will go out as at other times before, and shake myself. And he wist not that the LORD was departed from him.

        1.    Too Many of us have never had the power of God to miss it when it is gone.
        2.    We are to Pray for the Power of God.

Yesterday I got a piece of mail from Golden Gate Seminary. It was a sharing about student scholarships. It gave an example of Taylor Field, one of the graduates in the 1986 class. He was one of the first graduates from this school with a Ph.D. The letter said he was one of the brightest and most academically gifted students the school ever had. ( Now remember I graduated there also).

Taylor is now a trustee and I served with him on a committee and could immediately see his abilities. When he graduated he had many opportunities but he chose to go into an inner city church in New York City. Miraculous things have happened.

Not because of Taylor's Field's power but because of the power of God. Other great intellects have gone to New York and accomplished nothing.

B.    A Request for Power to be . . Steadfast In the Patience of God. v 11 b
        ". . . for the attaining of all steadfastness and patience; . . ."

        1.    Steadfastness = Staying Power.
        2.    Patience = Staying under the burden.

Illustration
I read of an architect who designed an archway for a king. The King thought it was beautiful but insisted the architect put a pole under it as he did not believe it would not eventually collapse.

The architect place the pole under the archway but unbeknown to the king he left the pole about 1/4 inch to short to touch the arch. He knew it could stand up against time. If you go see it today a guide will rub a card through the space between the pole and the arch.

God can empower us to Stand.

C.    A Request for Power to be . . Smiling In the Pleasure of God. v 11 c ". . . joyously: . . "

        1.    The Praying Christian is a Happy Christian.

V 11 "strengthened with all power, according to His glorious might, for the attaining of all steadfastness and patience; joyously

Illustration Power, Spiritual: Why The Computer Didn't Work
In his book Spiritual Stamina, Stuart Briscoe tells the story of a man who bought a new computer. He carefully opened the box, took the machine out, studied its manual, and connected the wires to the computer turned it on and nothing happened. He rechecked all the connections. He fastened the wires more securely. He read again the relevant portion of the manual. Satisfied that he'd followed directions, he flipped the computer on--and again nothing happened. As his anger rose the man's little girl walked into the room.

"Hi, Daddy!" her cheery voice rang out. "What a pretty computer! Can I plug it in?" --Moody
